When Jesus speaks of mammon, he is not speaking of it as a thing, he is referring to it as a "Person" - a spiritual entity.
If mammon (money) is a spirit, it is keeping you poor so you will always be chasing (worshipping, idolizing) it.
If it gives you wealth, riches or fame, it does so because it knows it already owns you.
If mammon truly rules you, you will know because fear or greed are present in your life.
Greed is ambition that is not focused on serving God.
Fear caused by mammon is when an unexpected bill causes fear or loss of peace.
Or when an event or setback disturbs and degrades your peace of mind.
Example: If you lie awake in bed at night worrying about how to pay a bill instead of sleeping peacefully, mammon is ruling your life.
When you trust in money more than you trust in God, mammon is ruling your life.
Luke 16: 9 - 13. Jesus is saying that you must become the master of money if you want to inherit the Kingdom of God.
You must become money's master, and not let it master you.
