Ten salient points from last nights men's Bible study. We are studying 2 Timothy as it relates to discipleship.

1. The word disciple in Matthew 9:9 is the Greek word akoloutheo means to follow or to follow someone's teaching.

2. You can be a convert of Christianity and not be a disciple, but you cannot be a disciple without being a convert.

3. You must humble yourself and be vulnerable and accountable with another human being in order to become a disciple.

4. In 2 Timothy 2: 3-7 Paul illustrates what a disciple of Jesus looks like: Soldier-endures hardships. Athlete-competes for the prize. Farmer-labors/sows to produce a harvest.

5. Soldiers, athletes and farmers have several things in common: What they do is hard. It requires patience, endurance and discipline. There must be a resolute focus which minimizes distractions. All three require other people to assist them in completing their task.

6. Disciples are not made from the pew or the pulpit. They are forged from developing deep personal relationships over time.

7. The American church boosts of conversions, baptisms and church attendance. You rarely hear statistics about how many of these converts and congregants become disciples who produce other disciples.

8. At first glance, one may conclude that one of the hardest places to be discipled is inside the walls of a church.

9. If the American church were consistently reproducing disciples, we would not be stressing about this up coming election!

10. Being a disciple who disciples others is a choice, not a given after conversion.
