La paz está con nosotros

"El derecho moral a la objeción de conciencia es reconocido en el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica de 1994 (secc. 2311), pero de ninguna manera es obligatorio," señaló el profesor de la Universidad de St. Thomas, Scott Wright, en una edición de St. Thomas Magazine. "Aun así, como forma de testimonio cristiano, el pacifismo — la oposición a toda guerra — también ha tenido una larga y distinguida tradición."

Esta tradición está enraizada en las Bienaventuranzas de Jesús y el don de la paz que deja con sus discípulos; se sostiene además por la exhortación de San Pablo a la iglesia de Corinto de ser necios por Cristo — y bendecir cuando son insultados, soportar cuando son perseguidos y hablar con amabilidad cuando son calumniados. La paz esté con ustedes hoy y todos los días siguientes.

Peace is with us

"The moral right to conscientious objection is recognized in the 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church (sect. 2311), but it is in no sense mandatory," noted St. Thomas University Professor Scott Wright in an issue of St. Thomas Magazine. "Still, as a form of Christian witness, pacifism — the opposition to all war — has also had a long and distinguished tradition."

This tradition is rooted in Jesus' Beatitudes and the gift of peace he leaves with his disciples; it is further sustained by Saint Paul's admonishment to the church in Corinth to be fools for Christ — and bless when reviled, endure when persecuted, and speak kindly when slandered. Peace be with you today and every day following.

Reflection Question: How can you respond to a difficult or hostile situation today with blessing instead of retaliation, as Saint Paul describes?

Out with the old

Hearing Christ's message for the first time can be troubling because it is so new. We want what is comfortable and familiar. Saint Thomas Aquinas understood the challenges that come with discipleship.

He prayed: "O Lord my God, make me submissive without protest, poor without discouragement, chaste without regret, patient without complaint, humble without posturing, cheerful without frivolity, mature without gloom, and quick witted without flippancy." Compose your own prayer filled with the old ways of living that you hope to replace with the new ways of life in Christ.

Reflection Question: What old way of living or thinking is God inviting you to release so that new life in Christ can take hold?

Fuera con lo viejo

Escuchar el mensaje de Cristo por primera vez puede ser perturbador porque es tan nuevo. Queremos lo cómodo y familiar. Santo Tomás de Aquino comprendió los desafíos que vienen con el discipulado.

Oró: "Oh Señor mi Dios, hazme sumiso sin protestar, pobre sin desanimarme, casto sin arrepentirme, paciente sin quejarme, humilde sin fingir, alegre sin frivolidad, maduro sin tristeza, y agudo de ingenio sin ligereza." Compón tu propia oración llena de las viejas formas de vivir que esperas reemplazar con las nuevas formas de vida en Cristo.

Pregunta de Reflexión: ¿Qué vieja forma de vivir o pensar te invita Dios a soltar para que la nueva vida en Cristo pueda arraigarse?
