Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania Veterans Ministry

Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania Veterans Ministry The DIOPA Veterans Ministry is a place of empowerment & healing. It is our will to address: spiritual, mental health, and basic needs EQUALLY for veterans.

The biggest drive behind starting this ministry is social justice! Veterans are trained/prepared to defend this country, but many are not prepared to cope with the impact it would have on their life once discharged (especially combat veterans). Through outreach and social service work; we have worked with veterans who were homeless and needed help getting back on their feet, needed help connectin

g with the community, or needed an advocate. These are simple requests from: individuals who volunteered (some drafted) to serve in the military, those who had to leave their families for months at a time, those who knew there was a possibility they would not return home, those who did return home but with PTS or substance abuse issues. We believe a ministry is ongoing not an act of service once or twice a year…. a ministry is a promise to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ for as long and as often as the need exists. This is our vision for a Veterans ministry.

If you are a female veteran or know of a female veteran who may have moral injury, the next cohort for the Moral Injury Program begins April 9th at 1pm (Virtual). Many may have heard of the term Moral Injury but are not aware of how it may manifest in our daily lives. Although for many females it stems from MST(Military Sexual Trauma) but it can stem from anything where there is a transgression against your deeply held moral beliefs and expectations...causing others harm, being harmed, guilt from not preventing harm, following orders that caused harm, discrimination, etc. This program provides a safe space to share your story.
Hope to see some of you soon!

Please share with veterans you have in your churches, including yourself!
We would like to recognize those in our diocese who have served in the military from the world wars to current. You do not need to have combat experience.
We would love to gather together, interview you about your time in the military and how faith has played a part of your life? Share to your comfort level, but we will not ask any specifics that may be sensitive . The purpose is to create a video in recognition of those who served our country in our pews and pulpits for this year’s veterans day. There will be food and time to meet other fellow veterans in the diocese! Those who would like to participate will be sent the date and location via email. The interview would not take place until after Easter.

Your Presence Is Requested! Female Veteran Healing Ceremony
June 1st 4pm-6pm (Virtual).
This event is led by The Rev Canon Toneh Smyth, LCSW, MSW, MHS of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania and Keitha R. Beamer, MSN, APRN, PMHCNS,BC; CARN-AP of the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz, VA Medical Center. The ceremony is apart of a 12 week moral injury program for female veterans. It provides them a space to celebrate their moral seriousness, share the truth of their military experience, and initiate them in a process of transformation we call "patient to prophet".

During the Ceremony, Veterans share their story of how they sustained moral injury during their time of service. This sharing process helps relieve the veterans of the moral burden many too often carry in isolation.
