If the witness of the church were a song, what would be its genre? In many churches, it seems to be pleasant background music, something that feels good, doesn't get in the way, and dulls our spiritual senses. Maybe the church needs to change its tune — maybe the church needs to learn to sing the blues. The blues are rooted in the suffering, grief, and injustice experienced by people in a world that has gone deeply wrong. To sing the blues is to express anger and pain in a way that does not give in to despair, but points to a better way. To sing the blues is to tell the truth about both pain and hope, in other words, three chords and the gospel. To preach the blues is to recover the prophetic voice of the church.
