What happens when we know what’s true, but choose something else anyway?
Romans 1 doesn’t shy away from that question. Paul talks about what happens when we trade God’s truth for a lie, but he also points us to the good news we desperately need: the gospel has the power to save.
This Sunday, we’ll be in Romans 1:13–25 talking about the truth we can know about God, why we need the gospel, and why Paul was so eager to share it.

Before we knew who our next pastor would be, we made a commitment to pray for him.

At the close of Sunday’s celebration, Pastor Ed took us to Joshua 24, where Joshua called God’s people to renew their commitment to the Lord and set up a stone as a witness to that commitment.

Then he invited our church family to make a commitment of our own: to set aside time each week to fast and pray for Northeast Baptist Church and for the pastor God will bring here next.

Those who made that commitment placed a stone in a basket. The stones will be gathered in a vase and displayed throughout this season as a visible reminder that we are praying together and trusting God to lead us.

If you weren’t able to participate Sunday, it’s not too late. The covenant cards and stones will be available again this Sunday.

As we enter this new season, we invite our church family to join us in praying faithfully for Northeast and for the pastor God is already preparing.

You can know the truth of the gospel. You can sing about it, pray about it, and hear it preached week after week, and still begin to live as though it has little bearing on your life.

That was the warning Moses gave Israel in Deuteronomy 8. They hadn't forgotten what God had done. They were in danger of forgetting Him in the way they lived.

In his parting sermon, Pastor Ed challenged us to consider the same question: Are we simply remembering the facts, or is the truth of the gospel still shaping the way we live?

May we never become so familiar with the gospel that we forget its power.

If you were with us on Pastor Ed’s last Sunday, you heard him invite our church family into a Covenant of Prayer and Fasting as we enter this season of searching for our next shepherd. We wanted to walk you through what that looks like and how you can take part.

In the atrium, you’ll find a desk waiting for you. It’s not just any desk. This is Pastor Ed’s desk, the one he studied and prayed at as he shepherded us. It has been moved out into the atrium for this season as a reminder that the place where our pastor sought the Lord on our behalf is now the place where we seek the Lord together for the one who will come next. On it you’ll find three things.

The Covenant. A large covenant document is laid out on the desk. Take a moment to read it, then sign your name alongside the rest of your church family. Every signature is a promise to pray earnestly for God’s wisdom and direction as we prepare to seek a new pastor, to fast as an act of devotion and trust, to seek God’s will for the future of Northeast, and to support one another with love, unity, and hope.

The Covenant Card. Next to the covenant you’ll find a stack of Covenant of Prayer and Fasting cards. Take one for yourself. On the back, write down your personal fasting commitment (a meal, a day, a habit, whatever the Lord leads you to offer Him) and sign it. That card is yours to keep. Put it somewhere you’ll see it regularly as a reminder of what you’ve committed to during this season. You’ll also find a prayer guide with six Scripture-based prompts to help you pray specifically for our new pastor.

The Stones. Beside the covenant is a basket of stones and a glass bowl. After you sign, take a stone from the basket and place it in the bowl. Throughout Scripture, God’s people set up stones as a lasting reminder of His faithfulness and their commitment to Him (Joshua 4). As the bowl fills up over the coming weeks, it becomes a visible picture of a church family choosing together to seek the Lord.

These items will be in the atrium through Sunday, September 20. Whether you sign this week or next, we’d love for everyone led to take part.

What a special day with our church family.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of celebrating Pastor Ed and Carol and 36 years of faithful ministry at Northeast Baptist Church.

We are grateful for the years of preaching and teaching, the prayers, the leadership, the friendship, and the countless ways they have loved and served our church family.

Pastor Ed reminded us yesterday to remember: God’s faithfulness in the past, His presence with us today, and His promises for the future.

Pastor Ed and Carol, thank you for 36 years of faithfully serving and loving Northeast. We are grateful to have been your church.

This Sunday, Pastor Ed will preach his final sermon as pastor of Northeast after 36 years of ministry with our church family.

We’ll gather for one special service at 10:00 a.m., followed by a retirement celebration honoring Ed and Carol Sasnett. Lunch and fellowship will follow.

We’d love to have you with us for this special day.
