Is your spiritual routine too rigid, or is there room for grace? 🌲 In our final “Building a Rule of Life” blog post, we move from ancient monastic theory to our modern, daily reality! We highlight the journey of Vestry member and acolyte master Anders Nolan, who learned firsthand the trap of perfectionism when trying to establish a sacred rhythm. Anders shared how he transformed an overly complicated, six-page list of spiritual demands into a simple, single-page rule that he keeps as the background screenshot on his phone. He reminds us that any sustainable spiritual practice must include self-forgiveness, beautifully comparing a good Rule of Life to a Loblolly pine, tall and rooted, but flexible enough to bend in the wind without breaking. Head to the link in our bio to read the full reflection and discover how to chart your own deliberate, grace-filled course!

Happy Pentecost! 🔥🕊️ We absolutely love welcoming our newest members into the Body of Christ through the sacrament of baptism, even when they get a little too fired up by the Holy Spirit! 😂 As Fr. Jared learned this week: Sometimes, babies slap back! At Christ & St. Luke’s, we believe that God’s grace meets us exactly as we are, whether we are crying, peacefully sleeping, or playfully swatting at the priest. Pentecost’s joyous (and slightly surprising!) baptism was a beautiful, lighthearted reminder of the unpredictable, life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit and the new beginnings we celebrate on Pentecost. Alleluia!

Come to our Diocesan Pride Eucharist next Wednesday, June 3, 6:00 p.m. — Join Bishop Susan B. Haynes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our church affirming that LGBTQ+ people have a full and equal claim to the love, acceptance, and pastoral care of the church. Charles Lane Cowen, Rector of St. Andrew’s, Norfolk, will preach. All are welcome! Childcare is available.

What does it take for a church to truly feel like a safe space? 🤔 As we celebrate 50 years of LGBTQIA+ inclusion in the Episcopal Church, we are so proud to share voices from our new mini-documentary! 🏳️‍🌈 In this clip, parishioner Mitchell Frizzell reflects on the reality that for many q***r individuals, the default assumption is that a church is not a safe space. Finding a spiritual home requires more than just basic tolerance; it requires an outward, visible sign that you will be fully celebrated, respected, and loved for exactly who you are. We invite you to experience this joyful, radical welcome firsthand at the Diocesan Pride Eucharist on Wednesday, June 3, at 6:00 p.m. Head to the link in our Instagram bio or at our website to watch the full film and hear more powerful stories from our community! God loves you—no exceptions. Welcome home. You belong.

Are we finding the right balance between “the one and the many” in our lives? This week, Fr. Noah reflected on the inherent tension between our unique individuality and our need to belong to a cohesive group. This challenge shows up everywhere, from the Little League baseball field, where, as Fr. Noah noted, “baseball is somewhat unique in the universe of team sports in that it is in many ways an individual sport played as a team,” to the very foundation of the Church on the Day of Pentecost. The Apostle Paul’s metaphor of the Church as the Body of Christ helps us navigate this. It’s a call to unity that still honors diversity, celebrating our individual “thoughts and talents and perspectives.” The Church, at its best, is a “premier social experiment” committed to the idea that “the highest human end is to be fully yourself for the benefit of others,” Fr. Noah said. We hope your interest is piqued by this sermon extract and that you’ll click through to the link in our instagram bio, or to our YouTube channel where the sermon is artchived for your listening pleasure. Join us as we explore how the Holy Spirit helps us hold this holy tension and become a “social witness” to what is possible. Will you commit to showing the world that it can be done?

In honor of Pentecost our congregation recited John 3:16 this morning in a variety of “tongues” or languages this morning, from Chinese Mandarin 🇨🇳, French 🇫🇷 , German 🇩🇪 , Greek 🇬🇷, Hindi, Italian 🇮🇹, Portuguese 🇵🇹, Spanish 🇪🇸, Swahili and Ukrainian 🇺🇦. From Acts 2:1-21: “When Pentecost Day had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly form heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues; as if fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested in each of them. All@of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”
