Monday Rise with Sis. Houston- “Get Some Rest”
I have served in ministry all my life, and one thing I have done very well is rest.
My word today is simple:
Get some rest.
Now let me be clear with the saints, because after 50+ years of serving in ministry, I’ve learned whenever we start talking about rest, the first thing Christians want to do is quit ministry.
Yep… I said it.
We will stop doing God’s work but keep doing everything else. We’ll still run businesses, chase money, scroll social media, attend every event, and stay committed to everything except Kingdom work.
Our alignment is off. If you are born again, Bible-believing, saved, baptized, Holy Ghost-filled, and able-bodied, you should be doing some type of Kingdom work. Service is part of our calling as believers.
Now you may be saying,
“I thought this was about rest. Why are you talking about work?”
Because, I’m talking about alignment.
One reason I have always been able to rest in ministry is because I lived out my calling and did not get entangled in titles, positions, or status. I moved to the beat of God’s drum.
When people made noise about who I was not, my first lady roles and duties, what position I should have had, or what title they thought I deserved, I learned to let it stay in the “noise zone”. I rested in knowing who God called me to be.
I rested in the voice of God. And because of that, I could serve Him without constantly feeling drained by people, pressure, comparison, and performance. I could love and serve them amid the noise.
So, if you are overwhelmed, exhausted, frustrated, and constantly wanting to walk away from ministry, it may be time to ask yourself a hard question:
“Am I doing what God actually called me to do?”
Some of us said yes because someone we liked “Pastor” asked us.
Some of us never stopped doing something after a season changed.
Some accepted positions because of the status attached to the title.
Some are carrying responsibilities God never assigned to them.
And now it takes all your energy just to maintain an image.
You don’t have the capacity, grace, or peace to sustain it because God never told you to carry it in the first place.
That is why you are weary.
The Bible gives us a powerful example in Martha. While Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, Martha became overwhelmed, distracted, and frustrated trying to manage everything around her. Martha was working, but she had lost the priority of simply being with God first. Jesus reminded her that Mary had chosen “the better part.”
Sometimes we are tired not because we are serving—but because we are serving disconnected from His presence.
This is how God works:
He asks us to be available, willing, open, and present. And when we stay close to Him, we hear His voice clearly.
But when we are distracted, unavailable, emotionally driven, or trying to prove ourselves, we miss His direction and end up taking on assignments that were never meant to belong to us or doing absolutely nothing and still feeling tired.
Not in alignment with God-will wear you out every time.
Get close to God again.
Let Him remind you who you are.
Let Him realign your service with your calling.
Because there is rest in obedience.
There is peace in purpose.
And there is freedom in staying in your lane with God.
Get some rest.
