Chinese New Year Activities
Our parish community celebrates Chinese New Year in 2023 with more emphasis on faith and cultural tradition.
Keeping Watch with Jesus
Our Chinese New Year celebration begins with the traditional Shou Sui (守歲). On Chinese New Year’s Eve, the whole family gathers together, lighting candles or oil lamps, and stay up in an all-night vigil awaiting the arrival of the Chinese New Year. Our church community adapts the concept of Shou Sui by keeping watch with Jesus in anticipation of the New Year. We will have a special schedule for Eucharistic Adoration on Chinese New Year’s Eve, January 21, 2023 from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. Come and keep watch with Jesus by signing up for an hour or more!
Chinese New Year Mass
On January 22, 2023, our parish community gathers together at 10:30am for a Eucharistic celebration for Chinese New Year. In the spirit of thanksgiving for all the blessings we have received in the past year, and in petition for a peaceful and thriving New Year, the Chinese New Year Mass allows us to offer the Sacrifice of praise to the Father, made possible only through Jesus Christ, and to be in communion with the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church. All are welcome to attend.
Solemn Tribute to Ancestors
Chinese New Year gives us the opportunity to make a solemn tribute to our deceased parents, grandparents and ancestors. By observing this annual ceremony, we set a reminder to our parish community, especially our youth, of our cultural values – that it is very important for us to respect our elders, both living and deceased. The Solemn Tribute to Ancestors immediately follows after the 10:30am Mass. In keeping with cultural tradition, Fr. Bill will give out the hong-pao and almond cookies to all.
Eat Dumplings in the New Year
A delicious way to welcome the New Year is by eating freshly cooked dumplings. Eating dumplings has become a cultural tradition among Chinese people to usher in the Chinese New Year with good wishes and bright expectations for the New Year. Everyone gets to enjoy the dumplings prepared by our volunteers in the Social Hall.
Pot-luck and Games
Can there be a celebration without more food and games? To make Chinese New Year a truly memorable event, we will also have a pot-luck and games for both children and adults. Special prizes await the winners!
