A Prayer for Juneteenth
Liberating God, on this day we remember the long-delayed news of freedom that word which traveled slowly across a wounded land until it reached those who had been kept in bo***ge long after the law declared them free.
We give you thanks for the courage of those who endured what no human being should endure, who preserved their dignity, their faith, and their song in the face of violence and silencing.
Forgive us, Lord, for the ways your Church too often blessed what you condemned, and remained silent when your prophets cried out.
Grant us the humility to name what was, the honesty to see what still is, and the courage to work for what must be.
We pray for our nation that the promise of freedom would be made whole, that the distance between declaration and reality would at last be closed, not by words alone, but by the repair of lives, the restoration of dignity, and the doing of justice.
Make us, O God, a people who do not merely celebrate liberation but who become agents of it, in our congregation, our community, and our common life.
Through Jesus Christ, who proclaimed release to the captive and the year of the Lord’s favor; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
