This is Sean Moore posting for Sacred Heart. Today I began receiving SCAM emails from someone impersonating Father Ed. The email address is not legitimate and is not associated with Sacred Heart or the Archidiocese. However, the person is using Father Ed’s name. Move these emails to junk. The person will ask you a favor and then say that he wants you to get ten gift cards from Target for the Sacred Heart Staff. He will say that you will be reimbursed but to send him the number on the back of the gift card. Again, this is a scam. Move the message to junk. And always check the actual email address, not just the name, of the sender. Father Ed’s email address is associated with the Archdiocese. This email address has nothing to do with the Archdiocese.

The Fourth of July is just a few days away, and that means we’ll be hearing a lot of talk about freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press…simply put, to be a citizen of the United States of America means to be free.

But the challenging question is: what does it really mean to be free?

Men, we can only be truly free when we embrace who we are in the truth of Christ. It sounds like such a paradox, but our freedom is most fully realized when we and willingly pick up our crosses. It is precisely through denying ourselves that we find freedom!

When we experience this kind of freedom, we are forever changed. We empower Christ to improve our lives, the lives of our families, and our communities. We also find the courage to stand up for what is right. We watch the tyranny of sin crumble and its influence wither.

As we gather with friends and family in gratitude for our country’s freedom, let’s pray we remember Christ our liberator as the source of all freedom:

From the tyranny of sin, Jesus give me freedom.
From my selfish ambition, Jesus give me freedom.
From the pursuit of comfort, Jesus give me freedom.

Jesus, may your truth set us free.
