Cemetery Revitalization Efforts
The board of directors has engaged in an effort to improve the appearance of the cemetery grounds. We all have loved ones who have made Fairhaven their final resting place and we want to show them proper respect by keeping the grounds in good appearance.
Some of the things done in 2021 include additional gravel on the driveways, re-seeding of the southeast quarter section, and replacing trees along the driveway.
For 2022, we plan to re-seed the southwest quarter section (in the fall), apply w**d control to the southeast and northeast sections, and put some additional gravel on the driveways. All of this takes money and costs are ever increasing, especially at this current time.
The single biggest maintenance expense we have is the mowing and trimming. In an effort to reduce the amount of time spent trimming and blowing around well over 2000 graves, we are asking people to adhere to the longstanding cemetery rules and regulations concerning grave decorations. As posted on a sign at the cemetery and on our website (www.fairhaven-cemetery.org), “ALL grave decorations are to be removed within 1 week after a Holiday.” Examples of items that need to be removed are plaques, figurines, vases, small wire-based decorations, wreaths, artificial flowers, wooden/plastic crosses, solar/battery lights, etc. Keep in mind these are just examples and not meant to be an all-inclusive list. The rule of thumb is that if the object is in the way of trimming, it needs to be removed so that it doesn’t get torn up by the string trimmers. Heavy gaged metal shepherds’ hooks, etc. will be allowed to remain, but they need to be placed as close to the stone as possible. In addition to removing ALL items placed around a headstone, any items sitting on a headstone must be affixed (glued) to the stone so that they do not get blown off by the blowers used to blow off grass clippings or by other high wind events. These efforts not only help to reduce the mowing and trimming labor expenses, but it also helps to protect headstones from being damaged by flying debris when a mower or string trimmer hits one of these objects in the grass.
We apologize for the late notice, but mowing season will be fast upon us. Any items not removed by end of day Thursday, 3/24/22 will be removed and placed near the storage shed at the west end of the cemetery with the name of the monument where they were removed from so that you can pick them up at your convenience.
As always, we thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our cemetery looking nice. If you would like to make a donation to help defray rising costs, those are always welcomed and appreciated. Please also consider making Fairhaven the recipient of memorials, grants, or other charitable gifts.
Thanks,
Fairhaven Cemetery Board
