Good morning, family/friends:

As noted yesterday several of our families will be traveling/camping in the next few weeks and physically away from our church family. But we will think of these brothers and sisters often and when we do offer a prayer for their safe return home and pleasant experiences while traveling. It's wonderful to be able to travel and share part of this big, wonderful world God created!

And as we pray, REMEMBER THESE SICK: Heather Simmons, relative of Cheryl, finished a second round of chemo and making progress at St. Jude. Steve Mastro, former member now living in FL and battling cancer. Judy Hopkins, another former member, also dealing with cancer. April's Mom as she continues rehab in a local nursing facility.
Pray also for Jon/Mark Hoover as they fly to MN this week for the funeral of a dear friend of the Hoover's. Ronnie/Sandi as they travel to Mattoon, IL with Ronnie's business. Remember Gary/Roberta as they sell their house and relocate in the Nolensville area. And remember Nancy/family as they continue to deal with several domestic issues.

Joey is learning the sound board and other A/V technicalities really fast and is a God-send for the congregation. Just as we're reminded of what it's like to live without the convenience of electricity when the power goes off, so it is with contemporary worship without the audio and visual aids we have come to appreciate. Thanks, Joey!

As Charlie mentioned Sunday we are reaching out to Lipscomb University--and perhaps other schools in the area--in an effort to supply our preacher pool, just as we've done with music leaders to fill those slots. Please be in prayer that God will direct us to just the right people needed for all areas of our congregational worship and ministry. I will be meeting with the director of Lipscomb's church relations ministry soon. In the meantime if you know of speakers who are Biblically based and balanced and available to speak for us please let any one of the shepherds know!

This next Sunday Dr. Roy returns to lead in studies from John's gospel. He will be with us the next two consecutive Sunday's. But beginning in Sept. he will only be with us once per month as the twice per month schedule he's been following had begun to impact his family situation. Come next summer he will not be able to give us any more of his time, period.

The Sunday morning adult class will begin John Eldredge's "All Things New" video series this next week. Eldredge says, "Most Christians miss the ultimate hope for their future because their views of heaven are vague, religious...and, frankly, boring. Hope begins when we understand that for the believer, nothing is lost. In this stunning video series the author shows how according to the Bible, heaven (the present heaven) is not our eternal home--the New Earth is. Jesus said the next chapter of our story begins with "the renewal of all things" (Matthew 19:28), by which He meant the earth, ourselves, and the restoration of everything we love." Please join us!

Men's gathering tonight at 7.

Be blessed in your week and watch where God will lead you to help rescue another!

Good morning, family/friends:

My late father in law, whom we affectionately called "Cracker", was a lifelong farmer. And I might add--a good one. Year after year the Lord and Cracker coaxed an old 250 acre southern Bedford Co. hill farm to maximum productivity. In winter, when farm activity slowed to mostly twice daily feeding of the cattle (this was prior to round bales), lots of farmers loafed, pretty much taking the winter off. Cracker said: "Do some work every day". (There were always fences/gates/machinery to be repaired and a host of other jobs that needed doing). Good advice!

To his counsel I would add: "Do something every day you don't want to do". Write that letter/email, make the call/text, go see that person in the hospital or nursing home, say what your heart knows you should, mow her lawn, pick up the old newspapers or other clutter from a neighbor's yard, make yourself spend a little time with someone you don't particularly like...you get the picture. It's time well vested--for you, and the recipient!

LIFTING PRAYERFUL HANDS TO GOD: Pray for Sandi and family in the passing of a special cousin, Emily Edmonds...for the baby in Dr. Jen's office family born with a heart defect but doing well following surgery...for the safety of students/parents/teachers as a new school year begins...for Nancy/family as they confront several issues...for Roberta/Gary as they sell their house and downsize to a new location...for Dr. Charlie as he deals with possible "tick fever"...for Vickie Jennings, Cheryl's cousin, recovering from heart surgery...for April's Mom/family, in rehab...for former member Steve Mastro, struggling against cancer and now living in FL. Welcome back Ellen/John/family from a much needed beach vacation!

Sunday we turn once more to our own church family to help provide the teaching. I believe Gary S. and Gary W. will each take a turn at the mike to inspire and encourage our daily walk with Jesus. Be there to hear what these brothers have to say!

Men's gathering tonight at 7. Remember, the Ladies Bible Class is recessing till later in the fall. A word of extra caution to those out and about from dusk till after dark: Watch out for the deer! I hit/killed one returning from the Men's Gathering last Monday evening; fortunately only minor damage to my old truck.

I close with an appeal from an old hymn:

Summer time is swiftly, swiftly passing by,
"Harvest time is ended," soon must be the cry;
Thus, O children, far and near,
Thus, O children, sweet and dear,
Summer time is swiftly, swiftly passing by.

Let us know, dear children, if you now are saved,
Thus to see you happy, long my heart has craved;
Come now, children, far and near,
Come now, children, sweet and dear,
Tell us, tell us quickly, are you truly saved?

Chorus:
Will you come to Jesus? Come, O come today,
Do not make excuses, seek Him while you may;
Hasten, children, far and near,
Hasten, children, sweet and dear,
Come, O come to Jesus, come without delay. --Nora B. Dodge ca. 1901

Good morning family/friends:

I awoke to pleasant circumstances...65 degrees, low humidity, and God's gift of still another sunrise to happen within an hour or so. We're very dry out here in the country but there's a fair chance of rain tonight and tomorrow. How different mine than the circumstances of many people in northern California! If they haven't already lost homes/property/lives to the raging, out-of-control wildfires they very well may! Imagine the travesty...the smoke, intense heat, grief, firefighter fatigue...by comparison I awoke to Nirvana!
Please pray for these dear people, try to imagine families, their loss, and ask God to bless and show us how we might help.

Continue your prayers for Gail's sister, now rehabbing in a different facility, her caregivers and family. So good to see Sandy P. recouping strength and returning to her pre-sick self. Others for whom we can pray: Nancy and her family, Janina's Dad, my cousin Jimmy in KY, fighting prostate cancer.

Men's gathering tonight at 7, teaching by Max Lucado on Heaven. The Ladies Class will have a summer break--beginning tomorrow-- and resume in the fall.

Beginning in September Dr. Roy will only be with us once per month as his activities and responsibilities with Trevecca have increased. Also a reduced schedule with us will allow him to worship with his family more, a good thing. Yesterday I mistakenly announced he will be with us this coming Sunday--not so, he returns for the last 2 Sundays in August.

Sunday will be exciting! In our sermon time we'll look at a Bible theme we've read dozens of times but possibly have yet to grasp it's full implications. In Romans 12: 1-5 Paul urges that we "...be transformed by the renewing of your minds..." which in turn will prove God's perfect will as worked out in daily life. What does it mean to operate with a "renewed mind" in our homes and businesses, and a world run amok? What difference does it make? Can others see a "renewed mind" mentality in us--or the same old, same old?

And speaking of Bible study: we're discovering some very rich material in our 9:15 Sunday morning class! We're just finishing John Eldredge's "Beautiful Outlaw" and about to begin his latest video series entitled "All Things New". This series is about heaven, or as the author says "the restoration of everything you love." If your vision of heaven is still fluffy white clouds, and winged human ghosts playing harps in an endless church service you will be in for quite a surprise--and relief! Care to join us?

DON'T FORGET--Sunday is our Potluck Meal following a time of worship and praise. It's the best buffet in middle TN--and the fellowship ain't bad, either! So hope YOU will plan to join us.

Be alert today to that someone God is leading you toward who so desperately needs the touch of Jesus you will bring him/her!

Julian

Good morning family/friends:

According to Jesus God sends "...rain on the just and the unjust alike." (Matthew 5:45). And I know He has justified me by the death of Jesus so the brief rain showers we've received this morning fell here on the just. I hope you know Jesus in the sense He has justified you too, meaning you've accepted His offer of mercy and pardon and are His child. If not, can we talk about that? Please call me.

PEOPLE FOR WHOM WE CAN PRAY: The family of C. D. Wright whose wife died last week...they are friends of Nancy and Robbie. Nancy and Robbie request we pray for their family and business situation. Continue to pray for Roberta and Gary, hopefully she is showing signs of improvement. Pray for Sandy P. to recover from a bout of flu-like symptoms she's dealt with this past week. Remember Gail's sister as she continues rehab. And we thank our beneficent Father for His providence when Bryan H. was caught too close to gunfire in a traffic situation this past week (a good example of how volatile our local culture has become and how close to home--none of us know when we leave our houses in the morning...).

We pray the security plan explained yesterday will never have to be used but are thankful it's in place if needed! Thanks to all who have attended meetings, offered input, helped install security cameras, etc. We aren't cocky but do feel we have made pretty good provision for our protection for a small church. I'm grateful to and for those who offer themselves from Sunday to Sunday as armed defenders of the flock. Thank you!

Men's gathering tonight at 7 (Max Lucado teaches about heaven) and the Ladies Bible Class Tuesday's at 9:30. Great opportunities for fellowship and enrichment from the Word.

Dr. Roy resumes studies in John's gospel this Sunday. Be alert that he may be tapping you as a participant in the Scripture reading.

It's summer and that means some of us are traveling and therefore away from church at any given time. Please remember the "home fires" have to be kept burning, so anything you can do to assist with this even while you're away is appreciated! We all want the security of knowing we have a home base in the local church but is easy to assume someone else will keep it going. It takes the whole village--including you! No chain is stronger than its weakest link. Put your heart into it.

Somewhere in your week ahead there is someone whom the Lord would love to use you to rescue! Pray before you embark upon your day He will reveal the person and circumstance to you! And then--be ready!

Good morning family/friends:

July is following course with all previous months...racing with meteoric speed on a linear trek to eternity! No hesitancy or slowing for me to catch up, idly ponder what may be happening, much less be wistful for the "good old days". (Eccl. 7:10 warns us "not to long for the good old days, as this isn't wise"). Words from an old hymn come to mind: "Time is filled with swift transition, naught of earth unmoved can stand, build your hopes on things eternal, hold to God's unchanging hand." Before you move another step this morning...reach out and up, take the hand He offers, and breathe the words "Abba, Father." Now walk hand in Hand with Him through the day, often glancing up to see His smiling face as He leads you through those dangerous intersections. "Abba, Father".

FAMILY/FRIENDS FOR WHOM WE ARE PRIVILEGED TO PRAY: Gail's sister Pat, will be doing rehab in a nursing facility. Roberta, as she continues therapy several times weekly (and Gary). Ellen's friend, who is having part of a lung removed this week. Steve Mastro, fighting a recurrence of cancer and having extreme difficulty being able to eat. The boys/coach in Thailand, trapped in a cave with water rising...I understand the fifth boy has now been rescued, leaving 7 and the coach. Thank You, Father! Praise also to our Father for Ellis's (Gary and Janina's grandson) successful surgery!

REMINDERS: Men's gathering tonight at 7, Ladies Class Tuesday's at 9:30.

Sunday I wrap our study of Proverbs by looking at one final "fool" as presented in the book. Perhaps none of Satan's devices have been quite as effective as his ability to turn the beautiful, God-created s*xual relationship intended to be shared only between husband and wife, into something devastatingly tragic and ugly! It's a universal trap our Adversary has set, impacting young, middle aged, and older. Mega-church pastor Rick Warren said some time back that men typically want to have s*x with every woman they meet! Whoa, no way I thought initially, but the more I've mused his premise the more I've come to understand (I think) what he meant, that there's an internal drive which has been hijacked from our pure, pristine created state into something carnal and often as base as the drive in a back alley tomcat. I recently spent several hours counseling a 75 year old woman whose husband (same age) was purportedly involved with another woman, (No, there is no connection whatever with CFC). IT CAN HAPPEN! Sunday we'll look again at Proverb's very explicit warnings but also the encouragements and rewards for being chaste. Reading for assembly is PROVERBS 6: 20-35.

As you walk among your peers today present yourself as "wise", that is someone who has risen above the folly and trivia of the masses (be wary of arrogance and pride). People admire wisdom in others--especially those who know Jesus as perfect Wisdom--and seek out those people in the office, community, and family who model His wisdom.

Good morning family/friends:

Maybe it can just be written off to the fact that I'm getting older as it seems the aging process often produces pessimism, or even in extreme cases, melancholy. But I really think it's neither of these, that I am in fact being alert and true to what's happening in the culture all around me when I insist our country is losing it's cherished freedoms at an alarming and unprecedented rate! Each 4th of July observance seems to bring a heightened awareness that "freedom is never free" and that unless the citizens of this great nation act decisively and quickly we will soon join the great parade of civilizations born in hardship, which flourished through hard work, discipline, and faith in Almighty God but eventually imploded, largely from internal irrosion.
Come Wednesday, may we be sensitive--as never before--to the freedoms we enjoy daily but also be deeply conscious of what we MUST DO to protect and preserve them!

FAMILY NEWS AND PRAYER CONCERNS: Congratulations to Ellen and Jon Hoover on their 49th wedding anniversary! Ellen and Jon joined their hearts and lives 49 years ago tomorrow. We are so happy to be part of their family and share in their lives. Remember Nancy and family as she has requested we pray for them--these are certainly not the best of times for the Pritchard's. Remember Roberta and Gary as her recovery efforts from depression continue. And pray for those you know who are traveling during this holiday week. Betty and I are enjoying having our children John, Jen, Maggie, and Hazel, with us for a few days.

Men's gathering tonight at 7, Ladies Class Tuesday's at 9:30.

Dr. Roy returns Sunday to resume studies in John's gospel. Anyone feel you don't get your money's worth when he teaches?

As always, "Lord, lead me to cross paths with someone today who in turn will see Jesus in me."

Good morning family, friends:

That enchanting melody "In The Good Old Summertime" first appeared around 1902 when its composers tried to sell it as sheet music. But there was little interest, publishers fearing that when summer ended so would attention to the song. Wrong! Many of us have even memorized the lyrics..."There's a time in each year that we always hold dear, good old summer time...when your day's work is over then you are in clover, and life is one beautiful rhyme. No trouble annoying, each one is enjoying, the good old summertime."
Then follows the more familiar chorus..."In the good old summer time, in the good old summer time, strolling thro' the shady lanes with your baby mine..." Remember?
Actually the Bible mentions summer several times, but just to note: Psalm 74: 17: "You set the boundaries of the earth, and you made both summer and winter." In Luke 21: 30 Jesus reminded: "When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near." Jeremiah lamented in 8: 20: "The harvest is finished, and the summer is gone", the people cry, "yet we are not saved!" (That's haunting!)
All this just to remind summer begins Thursday. Welcome!

PRAY FOR THE SICK: For Gail's sister Pat, having suffered another stroke and is now in rehab in a nursing home. For Gary W., dealing with swelling in his knees and ankles and the attendant pain.

There will be a "Meet and Greet" for gubernatorial candidate Bill Lee, Tuesday from 4:30--6:00 pm at the home of Beth and Tommy Throneberry, 930 East Main, Murfreesboro. Bill has spoken at CF several times, dating back to when we met in the Triune Community Center. If interested in attending you can RSVP Tommy at 615-796-3306.

Thanks to Andrey Shepelenko for his update yesterday on the work of sharing the gospel in Ukraine. Along with wife Yulia, sons Vlad and Christian, the family shares Jesus with lots of people, especially youth, and CF is privileged to partner with them in the efforts.

Men's meeting tonight at 7, and we are thoroughly enjoying hearing Max Lucado teach on "Heaven!" We guys are appreciating this time together in our "man cave." Ladies class Tuesday's at 9:30.

Dr. Roy is back Sunday to resume studies in John's gospel. Invite a friend to this feast.

We are looking to put a wrap on our church security efforts by finalizing a specific action plan for the congregation and making sure everyone is on board. Following services on July 15th we will go over the plan together, make everyone aware of any "codes" that would be flashed on the screen in the event of an emergency, and just be sure we all know what to do should we ever need to act. Your presence on that date is very important!

Remember...ask God to lead you, guide you to someone today whom you can encourage as a fellow believer in Jesus, or help point them to Him!

Good morning family, friends:

When the Bible warns it isn't wise to long for "the good old days" (Eccl. 7:10) perhaps the intent is to keep our focus on the many blessings we have in the present, blessings that didn't exist "back then". Wouldn't you cringe to try to live without electricity, clean water, an automated air-conditioned automobile, modern medicine? I'd hate to have to give up my computers, pocket-sized as some of them are now in our phones.
Speaking of computers this caught my attention: "The Summit supercomputer has a peak performance of 200,000 trillion calculations per second--or 200 petaflops, making it eight times faster than the Titan Cray X supercomputer..." We can only pray such a marvel of man moves people more in awe of God--Psalm 8--because such power as the Summit has doesn't even begin to approach God's power and might!

PRAYER CONCERNS: Gail's sister Pat has suffered another stroke in Johnson City; Gary and Roberta request prayer for their son Robbie; Nancy asks us to pray for her family situation; remember Janina as she undergoes cataract surgery today; Julie has been diagnosed with A-fib; Sandy P. sees her primary today for symptoms which kept her and Vern away from our gathering yesterday; Betty and I ask your prayers for our son John, dispatched to Portland, OR, for a week of special training.

Our thanks to Captain Mark Elrod of the Williamson County Sheriff's Department for taking valuable time both Saturday and Sunday to come help us with our security issues at church. Despite the two presentations for convenience still several of our folk did not attend either session. From here we devise our own plan of action and try to get everyone on board with it. Stay tuned.

"Looks like it has just always been there..." is but one of the many compliments I've heard about Ronnie's craftsmanship in the installation of the new exit door in our sanctuary! Capt. Elrod was pleased with all the measures we've taken to protect ourselves against harm and the new door was a major advance. THANK YOU RONNIE, and associates for a job well done!

This Sunday we welcome Andrey Shepelenko, a young man whom CF helps support in sharing Jesus with the people of Ukraine. He will bring us up to speed on how the gospel is being shared with so many in that war-torn country. Andrey doesn't get stateside often so please make a special effort to attend Sunday!

Men's gathering tonight at 7 and a Ladies Bible class Tuesday's at 9:30. Both events at the church building.

Pray for President Trump's meeting with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, that a peaceful solution to a potentially deadly nuclear situation may be had. BTW, it is believed by experts on North Korea that the masses of that country will not even know about the meeting till Un is wheels up after the meeting is history! This nation is unbelievably sheltered from anything but propaganda which they are fed as one might feed animals.

Lest we forget: Sunday is Father's Day and I have planned a special, brief recognition of Dad's role in our lives. I think you'll like it. Spoiler alert: have a tissue handy!

Before you go father into your day--if you haven't already please ask Jesus to use you and guide you to that someone He has prepared for you to bless today!

Good morning family, friends:

Here's a very important announcement regarding the completion of our CHURCH SECURITY PLAN: this coming Saturday, June 9th, Captain Elrod from the Williamson County Sheriff's Department will be at the church building to instruct and help us put in place a plan for security in the event of an unwanted attack against our persons or property. This meeting begins at 2 pm and everyone from CFC who is interested is invited and encouraged to attend.
Next day, June 10th, our worship service will be planned to end by 11 am and Captain Elrod will be back to implement the security plan and make sure everyone is reading off the same page should an emergency arise at church. I cannot emphasize how important it is for each of us to be present for these meetings! We want to get this plan in place, and make all our members familiar with it. Please plan to be present!

As we offer prayer for those dealing with illness and/or sorrow, pray for: Julie's friends Leanne and Paul. Leanne died last week leaving Paul pretty much alone as the couple have no children. Pray for little Hatcher as he fights a virus and the family struggles to prevent contagion. Pray for Roberta and Gary as they continue treatment efforts seeking relief for her depression. Today is the funeral in Dickson for the fallen sheriff's deputy...pray for his wife and child and the many friends and other officers.

Men's meeting tonight at 7. Women's class Tuesday's at 9:30.

As the book of Proverbs selects and highlights various types of fools (people whose lifestyle is abhorred by God and not to be emulated by any) still another is THE SLUGGARD, or lazy person. Please be reminded that laziness according to Proverbs isn't limited to a person who will not work (and could) to support himself and his family. There are other types of laziness we must be sensitive to correct as we walk before and with God. A reading for our assembly is PROVERBS 24: 30-34.

Before you leave your house each morning ask Jesus to protect you, but also to guide you to someone whose burden you can help lift! Even before encountering such a person or situation ask for wisdom to deal with the issue so that Jesus is honored. One little example: more than once of late I've been approached by people in a Walmart parking lot, seeking money, often with Walmart security in hot pursuit. A very brief window of opportunity--how best to respond--ask God to prepare you!

MEMORIAL DAY, 2018

Appropriate honor for the dead has always been a high water mark of any self-respecting society. As the patriarch Abraham traveled through the land of the Hittites his beautiful wife Sarah died at age 127. Lacking our contemporary conveniences all he could do was bury her body then and there, his grief compounded that he couldn’t place his beloved’s remains where he wasn’t a “stranger and foreigner”. But he went to great lengths to secure just the right burial place and to register it publically among the local folk, preempting future dispute but also prompting due recognition. Genesis 23:1-20.
Death never takes a holiday, which means Memorial Day is a perpetual privilege. Even as I write these words I am preparing to speak at two funerals over the long Memorial Day weekend. These families too, as Abraham, have had to arrange for the proper disposition of their dead. There will be ceremonies to honor their lives, to “memorialize” the deceased, and respectful care of their earthly remains has been a priority. It’s the American way and I pray we as a people will never lose the sanctity of such respect. It’s what Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus provided Jesus at His death.
Memorial Day in America was begun shortly after the Civil War to honor the dead of both Union and Confederate armies. I cannot fathom the impact of this war on a young country of fewer than 32 million citizens but which claimed more lives than both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan combined!
At the close of that horrible travesty our 16th President wrote—and his words echo hauntingly: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth (italics mine) of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Good morning family, friends:

*Blessed Memorial Day! May we each drink deeply of the significance of this national holiday and observe in your own personalized way! To help enhance our appreciation of the day I'll be sending--in a separate email--a little piece I've written about Memorial Day. I hope it blesses.

*We have the privilege of lifting in prayer the following individuals and families: Julie, upon the passing of her friend Leanne. Arrangements unknown at this time. Sandi, that the injection she received last week will become effective. For the Hatcher family as they bid goodbye for now to their Mom and matriarch, Jacque. For Steve Mastro, former member and musician now living in Florida, dealing with the development of a new tumor. For Crystal and Bryan, and all who may be on the road during this long holiday weekend.

*The memorial service for Jacque Hatcher is set for tomorrow, 6:00 pm at Battle Mountain Farm on Arno Road. There will be visitation with the family beginning at 4.

*The Men's Gathering WILL NOT meet tonight as it is a holiday and families are unusually involved with one another. We'll resume the gathering next week.

*Please remember this coming Sunday we have our FELLOWSHIP MEAL following worship activities. Bring your favorites, or try a new recipe, and we'll have plenty for all and a delightful time!

*The SHEPHERDS will meet following our meal Sunday.

*Those privileged to exercise the Spirit's gifts in leading worship: WELCOME: Sandy P. PRAYER: Gary F. SCRIPTURE: various readers to be chosen as Dr. Roy continues studies in John's Gospel. FREESTYLE: Gary S.

*We are working with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office to set up two dates whose activities will allow us to finalize and put in place our emergency plan for the congregation. (1) All in the church who are particularly interested in this plan will be asked to meet on a Saturday of the Sheriff's Office choosing. Representatives will teach us what we need to know in the event of one or more emergency situations, answer questions, etc. (2) Following, on a Sunday then to be chosen, the Sheriff's Office will meet with the entire congregation following our worship assembly and make ALL aware of the emergency plan. We'll share these two dates just as soon as we have them finalized with the Sheriff's Office. Thank you for your patience and thank you Gary Farmer for making these contacts!

Blessed Memorial Day!
