BRIEF SERMON OVERVIEW
July 17 on Hebrews 11:1-16
What is faith? Is it emotional? Is it how I feel?
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for and evidence of things unseen. To truly go further and understand faith, we need as Christians to understand truth and relativism because our culture has put those two together in an attempt to redefine faith. For example, one axiom for culture is the statement "all truth is relative." This is a self-defeating statement as truth is absolute in that if something is true it must be true for all people in all places at all times. Relative indicates always changing all the time. "All truth is relative" is an impossibility and a pipedream at best. Once we rid ourselves of incorrect assumptions about truth, then we will be able to fully see faith for what it is. The assurance of eternal life, forgiveness of sins, being reconciled unto God through Christ, and looking forward to praising Him in heaven. We gain assurance of these things by the evidence presented to us for them. Without truth, the evidence gives way to feelings and experiences and faith becomes whatever I want it to be - which would be different than what you have.
