Starting to Function in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Grace gifts.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:4)
The word for “gift” in this verse is “charisma.” It is a variation on the Greek word for “grace” which is “charis.” (This word sounds like “care-iss.”)
Something that is a gift comes by grace. This means that all of the gifts of the Spirit are unearned and undeserved. They are “grace gifts.” If they were earned, then they would be wages. If they were deserved, they would be rewards. The spiritual gifts are neither a wage nor a reward. They are true gifts in that they are given by God because He is good and not because we are good.
The spiritual gifts are given through a Christian for the benefit of another person. Neither the person manifesting the gift nor the person receiving the gift are deserving of the gift. It is grace - unmerited favor from God - that is happening to both as a spiritual gift is manifesting.
This is important. When God uses someone to manifest a spiritual gift, He is pleased, but He is not saying to anyone that the person manifesting the gift or the person receiving the gift is somehow better than the rest. He is not saying that everything that the person manifesting the gift is saying is correct. It is not an approval of the lifestyle of the person manifesting the gift either. He gave the gift through grace, unmerited favor. The real thing that He is saying by giving a gift is “I love you.”
The Apostle Paul gives us more information about the purpose of the gifts of the Spirit. He writes:
So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church. (1 Corinthians 14:12)
What is the proper motive to function in the gifts of the Spirit? Paul says “seek to abound for the edification of the Church.”
“Edification” means to “build up.” Seek to use the gifts of the Spirit to “build up” other believers. Paul said something similar a couple of chapters before. He wrote:
"But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." (1 Corinthians 12:7)
The reason that the gifts are given by God is for the benefit –the common good - of the Church. However, this “common good” can extend beyond the Church as a believer ministers a spiritual gift to a non-Christian.
The spiritual gifts are not given to make someone important in the eyes of other people. They are not given to make some rich. There should never be a price tag on them.
It is important not to have corrupted motives when seeking to learn how to function in the gifts of the Spirit. We should want the Lord to get the credit –the glory – for the good things that He does for someone through a gift of the Spirit.
Our motive should be to build up – help - people. Consider Christ’s motives as He healed the sick:
And when He went ashore, He saw a great multitude, and felt compassion for them, and healed their sick. (Matthew 14:14)
and...
And moved with compassion, He stretched out His hand, and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed." And immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. (Mark 1:41-42)
and…
And moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him. (Matthew 20:34)
and..
And when the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, "Do not weep." And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise!" And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother. (Luke 7:13-15)
If we keep the right motives –a compassionate desire to help people – then we are in tune, in harmony, with the compassion of the Holy Spirit, and this will give Him greater access to us to manifest gifts to help others. Follow Jesus.
