WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE ALTAR?
Understanding the Heart of Catholic Worship

“At every Mass, the altar stands at the center of Catholic worship. Yet many Catholics do not realize that even the altar itself contains rich symbolism and sacred meaning.”

Every Catholic has seen the altar.

It is the focal point of the celebration of the Holy Mass, the place where the Eucharistic sacrifice is offered and where heaven and earth meet in worship.

Yet many Catholics know surprisingly little about the altar itself.

In Catholic tradition, the altar is not simply a table. It is one of the most sacred furnishings within a church because it represents Christ Himself and serves as the place where the sacrifice of the Cross is made present sacramentally during the Mass.

Understanding its parts helps Catholics appreciate both its beauty and its profound spiritual significance.

1. WHAT IS THE ALTAR?
The altar is the sacred table upon which the Eucharistic sacrifice is celebrated.

From the earliest centuries of Christianity, the altar has been regarded as the center of liturgical worship.

It is here that bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.
For this reason, the Church requires that the altar be treated with great reverence and dignity.

Before Mass, the altar is prepared.
During Mass, it becomes the center of the Eucharistic celebration.

After Mass, it remains a sacred reminder of Christ’s sacrifice and presence.

2. THE ALTAR MENSA
The mensa is the flat upper surface of the altar.
The word mensa comes from the Latin word for “table.”

This is the part upon which:
* the corporal is placed
* the chalice rests
* the gifts are presented
* and the Eucharistic sacrifice is celebrated

Because of its sacred purpose, the mensa is treated with particular reverence.

3. THE ALTAR BASE OR SUPPORT
Beneath the mensa is the altar’s supporting structure.

Depending on the church, this may consist of:
* pillars
* solid stone supports
* carved wood
* or other dignified materials
Its purpose is both practical and symbolic.

Just as Christ is the foundation of the Church, the altar stands firmly upon its base.

4. THE ALTAR CLOTH
The altar cloth is the white cloth placed upon the altar.

The Church requires that at least one white altar cloth cover the mensa during the celebration of Mass.
The cloth serves both practical and symbolic purposes.

It reflects the dignity of the altar and recalls the linen cloths associated with Christ’s burial.

5. THE RELICS OF SAINTS
In many churches, relics of saints are placed beneath or within the altar.
This ancient Christian practice dates back to the early Church, when Mass was often celebrated over the tombs of martyrs.

The presence of relics reminds Catholics of the communion of saints and the witness of those who gave their lives for Christ.

6. THE ALTAR CROSS
Near or upon the altar is a crucifix or altar cross.

The cross reminds worshippers that every Mass makes present the one sacrifice of Christ on Calvary.
The Eucharist and the Cross can never be separated.

The altar cross helps keep this truth before the eyes of the faithful.

7. THE ALTAR CANDLES
Candles are placed upon or near the altar during Mass.

They symbolize:
* Christ the Light of the World
* reverence
* prayer
* and the sacredness of the liturgical celebration

The number of candles used may vary depending on the liturgical occasion.

8. THE ALTAR STEPS (WHERE PRESENT)
In some churches, the altar is elevated by one or more steps.

These steps help distinguish the sanctuary from the nave and emphasize the importance of the altar as the center of worship.

They also remind believers that the liturgy draws them toward heavenly realities.

IN SUMMARY: THE HEART OF CATHOLIC WORSHIP
The altar is far more than a piece of church furniture.

It is the sacred place where Christ’s sacrifice is sacramentally made present and where the faithful gather around the Eucharistic mystery.

Its various parts; the mensa, base, altar cloth, relics, altar cross, candles, and steps, each contribute to its beauty, dignity, and spiritual meaning.

Every time Catholics attend Mass, the altar quietly proclaims the central mystery of the Christian faith:
Christ died, Christ is risen, and Christ remains present among His people.

Today, reflect:
When I look at the altar during Mass, do I recognize it as the sacred center of Catholic worship?

“The altar is the table of sacrifice, the table of the Lord, and the heart of the church’s liturgical life.”

WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE TABERNACLE?
Understanding the Church’s Most Sacred Vessel

“Behind the small golden door in many Catholic churches lies the greatest treasure on earth: Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.”

Every Catholic has seen the tabernacle.

It is usually found in a prominent place within the church, often adorned with beautiful designs, a sanctuary lamp nearby, and a sense of reverence surrounding it.

Yet many Catholics know surprisingly little about its structure and purpose.

The tabernacle is not merely a decorative piece of church furniture. It is the sacred vessel in which the Blessed Sacrament is reserved after Mass, making it one of the most important objects within a Catholic church.

Understanding its parts helps us appreciate both its beauty and its sacred purpose.

1. WHAT IS A TABERNACLE?
The tabernacle is the secure, dignified receptacle in which the Blessed Sacrament is reserved after the celebration of Mass.

Because Catholics believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist; Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, the tabernacle occupies a place of special honor within the church.

The Church requires that it be:
* dignified
* secure
* immovable
* and suitable for Eucharistic reservation

The tabernacle therefore serves both a practical and spiritual purpose.

It protects the Blessed Sacrament while also reminding believers of Christ’s abiding presence among His people.

2. THE TABERNACLE DOOR
The most visible part of the tabernacle is its door.

This door protects the Blessed Sacrament and is usually decorated with sacred symbols such as:
* a cross
* wheat and grapes
* the Lamb of God
* Eucharistic imagery
* or other Christian symbols
The door serves as a visible reminder that something precious and holy is kept within.

3. THE TABERNACLE INTERIOR
Inside the tabernacle is the sacred chamber where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved.

The interior is often lined with precious materials or fabric as a sign of reverence and honor toward Christ present in the Eucharist.

This inner chamber is the heart of the tabernacle because it is where the consecrated Hosts are kept.

4. THE CIBORIUM
Although technically a separate sacred vessel, the ciborium is usually found inside the tabernacle.
The ciborium is the covered vessel that contains the consecrated Hosts reserved for Holy Communion and for bringing Communion to the sick.

Many Catholics looking inside a tabernacle are actually seeing a ciborium resting within it.

5. THE TABERNACLE LOCK
The Church requires that the tabernacle be securely locked.

This lock protects the Blessed Sacrament from theft, desecration, or misuse.

While simple in appearance, the lock serves an important role in safeguarding what Catholics believe to be the Real Presence of Christ.

6. THE TABERNACLE KEY
The tabernacle key is used to open and secure the tabernacle.

Because of the sacred responsibility attached to it, the key is usually entrusted to the priest, deacon, sacristan, or another designated minister.

The careful handling of the key reflects the Church’s reverence for the Eucharist.

7. THE SANCTUARY LAMP
Though technically not part of the tabernacle itself, the sanctuary lamp is inseparably connected to it.

The lamp burns near the tabernacle to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
Whenever Catholics enter a church and see the sanctuary lamp burning, they know that Jesus is present in the tabernacle.

For this reason, the sanctuary lamp has become one of the most recognizable signs of Christ’s Eucharistic presence.

8. THE TABERNACLE PEDESTAL OR BASE
Many tabernacles rest upon a pedestal, altar, or specially designated stand.
This base elevates the tabernacle and helps emphasize its importance within the church.

Its purpose is not merely practical but symbolic, highlighting the dignity of the Eucharistic presence reserved within.

IN SUMMARY: THE HOUSE OF THE EUCHARISTIC LORD
The tabernacle is far more than a beautiful object within a church.

It is the sacred dwelling place of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

Its various parts; the door, interior chamber, ciborium, lock, key, sanctuary lamp, and pedestal, all work together to protect, honor, and draw attention to the Eucharistic presence of Jesus.

For Catholics, every tabernacle is a reminder of Christ’s promise:
“I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

Today, reflect:
When I enter a church and see the tabernacle, do I recognize and reverence the presence of Jesus truly present in the Eucharist?

“The tabernacle is not simply a sacred container. It is the dwelling place of the Eucharistic Lord.”

SUNDAY NIGHT PRAYER — LAST NIGHT OF MAY (END OF MONTH)

Heavenly Father,

As I come before You on this final night of May, I do so with gratitude, reflection, and surrender. Thank You for the gift of life throughout this month—for the days I saw light and the nights I walked through silence, for the moments of joy and the seasons of struggle.

Lord, I acknowledge that You have been with me in every step. Even when I did not understand Your ways, You were faithful. Even when I felt weak, You sustained me. Even when I was uncertain, You carried me forward.

Tonight, I lay this entire month before You:

every joy I experienced,
every burden I carried,
every unanswered prayer,
every mistake I made,
every tear I shed,
and every victory You allowed me to see.

Lord, I surrender it all into Your hands.

Cleanse my heart from anything that does not please You. Wash away every bitterness, fear, regret, and anxiety that may have accumulated in me this month. Let me not carry emotional or spiritual heaviness into the new month.

I thank You for protection I did not see, for provision I did not expect, and for grace I did not deserve. You have been my helper, my refuge, and my strength.

Lord Jesus, as I close this month, I ask You to heal what is broken in me. Restore what has been lost. Strengthen what has been weak. And prepare me for what lies ahead.

I place my family, my work, my health, my plans, and my future into Your loving hands. Cover us with Your precious blood. Let no harm, accident, or evil come near us as we transition into a new month.

Father, I declare that I will not enter the new month in fear or defeat. I will enter it with faith, hope, and expectation of Your goodness.

Let the new month bring:

peace where there was confusion,
healing where there was pain,
open doors where there were delays,
favor where there was struggle,
and joy where there was sorrow.

Lord, I release this month completely and I receive Your peace as I sleep tonight. Guard my mind, calm my heart, and surround me with Your presence.

I declare:

May the past month be covered by mercy.
May the coming month be filled with grace.
May my life be held in Your hands.
May Your will be done in me.

Into Your hands I commit my rest tonight, Lord.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen. POPE LEO XIV
