Day 2 Give Up Control
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path. Proverbs 3:5-6
I’m married to a man, a very sweet man, who knows how to love well. I feel cherished every moment of my life. There is one little thing. He is a control freak. He wants everyone to be happy. He somehow feels responsible to make that happen for me, for our children and our grandchildren, our congregation, and he will spend hours trying to figure out a way to fix things. He is devastated when he is not always successful. I have tried for years to convey that the happiness of everyone he knows is not his to ensure. He doesn’t get it; he probably never will. And so, I leave him to it. He is getting better at letting go and letting God take care of it. In fact, lately, I’ve heard him say, “Don’t worry, if it’s God’s will it will happen, if not it won’t, so we don’t have to worry.”
The truth is, we were not meant to be in charge. That is God’s job. If we keep our sticky little hands off, He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above what our finite minds can even begin to imagine.
When we try to control people and circumstances, we become exhausted and discouraged. We spend sleepless nights plotting and planning how we can make the lives of those around us better. We scheme to try to make sure what we think is best comes to pass. We campaign to bring others into our way of thinking. And when we fail, well, we hit rock bottom.
God can handle it all, thank you very much. He doesn’t need your help. Not even a little bit.
So, I suggest right this minute, you resign as General Manager of the Universe and let God do what only He can do. As you surrender to Jesus and take your hands off, the peace and joy will flow.
Prayer:
Father, I give up! I give up what I want. I give up trying to control the lives and circumstances of those around me. I give you control. I’m so tired of trying to fix things. In Jesus able Name, Amen!
