Acts 16:16-19 - New International Version

16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved!” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.

19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.

I bought myself a book of stories told by Dr. Fred Craddock, a famous Appalachian preacher who was known for his stories. He’d always include a story in his sermon and they’re all true stories.

I’m borrowing one of his stories for this sermon. (Yes. You’ve heard this story before.)

He writes – “Up near me, at Fannin County Hospital, ministers around take turns being chaplain for the week. I took my turn, and the week I was on watch, there was a baby born. Not a lot born in that little bitty thirty-bed hospital. But I went there, it was about nine o’clock in the morning, and I saw all these people gathered, looking through the glass. There was that little bitty new baby, and it looked like a clan of people gathered around.

I said, ‘What is it, boy or girl?’

‘It’s a girl.’

‘What’s the name?’

‘Elizabeth.’

‘Well, is the father over here in this group?’

‘No.’ Looked back over there, and leaning against the wall, was a young man.

He said, ‘I’m the father.’

I said, ‘Baby’s name Elizabeth?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Beautiful baby.’ She was squirming – you couldn’t hear through the glass – but she was squirming, and red faced, and all like that. I thought maybe he might be concerned, and I said, ‘Now, she’s not sick. It’s good for babies to scream and do all that. It clears out their lungs and gets their voices going. It’s all right.’

He said, ‘Oh, I know she’s not sick. But she’s mad as hell.’ And then he said, ‘Pardon me, Reverend.’ I said, ‘That’s all right. Why’s she mad?’

He said, ‘Well, wouldn’t you be mad? One minute you’re with God in heaven and the next minute you’re in Georgia.’

Well! I thought, Man, I’ve got myself a real mountain Gnostic here on my hands. This guy’s been reading Plato. I said, ‘You believe she was with God before she came here?’

He said, ‘Oh, yeah.’

I said, ‘You think she’ll remember?’

He said, ‘Well, that’s up to her mother and me. It’s up to the church. We’ve got to see that she remembers, ‘cause if she forgets, she’s a goner.’”

Might that be what has happened to this country? We’ve become a nation of spiritual amnesiacs. People have forgotten that they came from God. They’ve forgotten that they lived with God before being born into this world?

(We’ve become a country of narcissists, a nation of “selfies.”)

SERMON BEGINS HERE - In this morning’s first reading, we are told about a girl who was “owned” by a couple of men who used her to make a living.

The men who “owned” her and used her to tell fortunes and make money were not the first to own her. The demonic spirit that “made a lot of money for her owners as a fortune-teller,” owned her first.

But now she not only serves a demonic spirit, but she also serves the two men who exploit her for money.

We’re told that she followed Paul and Silas around shouting, ““These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved!”

In life everyone ends up “serving” someone or something and unless we’re careful, whoever or whatever we are serving can cause us to forget that we were “owned” by God first and were withGod before we came into this world.

It’s remembering where we came from that enables us to make the kinds of choices and decisions in life that keep us on the path God sent us into this world to follow.

Unfortunately, we are living in a time when it seems like the majority of people in this world, and certainly in this country, have forgotten where they came from and as a result, lawlessness abounds. Absolute anarchy. Fewer and fewer people remember Heaven. Fewer and fewer people even think about God and God’s will for their lives.

What happened?

Technology happened. The Internet happened and especially cell phones happened.

Cell phones are a blessing, but for a lot of people cell phones have atrophied their spiritual connection to God.

I recently read an interesting article written by a man who said that just like we have physical DNA handed down to us by our ancestors, we also have spiritual DNA handed down to us by our ancestors.

Our ancient ancestors lived without the kinds of technology we have today, and they were deeply spiritual people. There were no such things as atheists in ancient times. Everybody was well aware of the reality of spiritual beings, both positive spiritual beings and negative spiritual beings, and they knew how to avoid falling under the influence of the negative spiritual beings.

Just like everybody is born with some of the physical characteristics of their ancestors, (physical DNA), it’s likely that everybody is also born with some of their ancestor’s spiritualcharacteristics, their spiritual DNA, as well.

The overuse of and over reliance on today’s technology has atrophied peoples’ spiritual DNA.

You’ve heard it said, “Use it, or lose it.”

That’s what has happened to a great majority of people in this country. They’ve lost their spiritual connection to God because they no longer use it.

We all serve somebody or something. Even the demon possessed slave girl in this morning’s first reading knew that.

It certainly seems like the vast majority of people in this country right now, serve their cell phones. They are never without them. Not even I am ever without my cell phone.

(Even little kids know how to use cell phones and believe it or not, according to professional exorcists, even demonsknow how to use them. There are some exorcists who report that they have received text messages from demons, telling them to back off and threatening them if they continue with their exorcisms. And some exorcists report that demons have even broken into their cell phone conversations with threatening messages when those exorcists are talking to other members of their exorcist teams and discussing the exorcisms being performed on individuals that demons are determined to hold captive.)

Technology is here to stay and I’m not blaming technology and especially cell phones for what is happening in this country, but I strongly suspect that something is using our addiction to cell phones to its advantage. Something knows how to keep us so preoccupied that we don’t have the time to focus on our connection to God, “our Father, Who art in Heaven.”

Just imagine what a difference it would make if the people who claim to believe in God spent even a tenth of the amount of time they spend on their cellphones, praying and seeking God’s will for their lives, seeking to know the unique work God sent them into this world to do.

And YES, you have work to do that only you can do. That is why it is so important for you to constantly seek God’s will for your life. And it’s fine to be inspired by others, but that doesn’t mean you have to become their clone. That is why individuality is encouraged here at Trinity. And that is what makes this church different than most other churches. Individuality is encouraged here because we acknowledge that God is very creative, delightfully creative! Just look at YOU!!!

May the companionship of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Communion of Saints give you the courage to do the work God sent you to do in the lives of those around you; thereby making a difference in their lives that nobody else but YOU could make; and changing their lives in a way nobody else but YOU could change them.

This world isn’t doomed!

God sent YOU!

Amen

Pentecost 2026 - John 7:37-39 - New Century Version - Jesus Talks About the Spirit

37 On the last and most important day of the feast Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 If anyone believes in me, rivers of living water will flow out from that person’s heart, as the Scripture says.”39 Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been raised to glory. But later, those who believed in Jesus would receive the Spirit.

It wasn’t the sound of a strong wind that attracted the attention of so many people, it was the sound of so many languages and dialects of those languages all being spoken at the same time.

It wasn’t as if each of the Apostles was speaking one foreign language, they were each speaking several different languages, plus dialects of those languages.

What else amazed the crowd was the fact that the Apostles were Galileans. There was extreme prejudice against Galileans.

They were considered uneducated, and they practiced a much less strict form of Judaism than Jews living in and around Jerusalem, Jews called “Judean Jews.” On top of that, many of the ancient ancestors of the Jews living in Galilee had married outside the Jewish race. Therefore, Judean Jews, the STRICT Jews, considered Galileans heretics, and cursed because the strict Jews believed that marrying outside the Jewish race would bring God’s wrath down on a family for literal generations!

So, given all that, is it any wonder why everyone wondered how in the world “Galileans” could possibly know so many different languages and their dialects andquote the Old Testament correctly?

And how could the Jews living in Jerusalem even tell that the Apostles wereGalileans? The Apostles weren’t wearing “I’m From Galilee” tee shirts. They basically looked like everybody else.

The answers is this: The Jews could tell that the Apostles were Galileans because the Apostles were speaking all those different languages and dialects, with a Galilean accent.

Galileans didn’t pronounce a hard “h” and, if singing with Peter, Paul and Mary, would have sung, “If I ‘ad a ‘ammer I’d ‘ammer in the morning.” They also didn’t pronounce the “c-h” sound like in “Loch Ness”, nor did they pronounce the “g” sound as in “go fish.”

Pentecost is not only about the Holy Spirit enabling the Apostles to speak languages they hadn’t learned on their own, thereby sending home the message about Jesus with so many kinds of foreign people in Jerusalem at the time; but it’s also about the kind of people God chooses to manifest His presence in this world: people with an accent, a Galilean accent.

And what, exactly WAS the Galilean accent, other than not pronouncing a hard “h” or the “c-h” sound, or the “g” sound? (Peter was from Galilee and that was how he was recognized as such in the courtyard of the High Priest’s house after Jesus was arrested. His accent!)

The Galilean concept of God and how they experienced God’s presence in their lives and lived their faith was a lot less complicated than that of the Judean Jews.

The religion of the Judean Jews was so strict and complicated and steeped in so much ritual that God was completely unapproachable by the common people. The common people just didn’t feel good enough for God, compared to the Judean Jews. The common people felt left out.

Sharing God with a Galilean accent means being honest with people about yourself and allowing them to know that if God can love and use and desires companionship with someone like you, (people that much stricter kinds of Christians look down on), then God can love and use and desire companionship with them even though they might have been told otherwise by other kinds of Christians.

Welcome to the church for common people. We’re a people who share the news about Jesus with a Galilean accent.

There is nothing pretentious about us. There are no clones here.

We are who we are and that’s good enough for God, because God knows each of us will always be a work in progress and loves us unconditionally.

That is why I have moved the prayer we pray, “Lord Jesus, let us preach You without preaching; not by our words, but by the example of our lives” to the be prayed after the Blessing and before the final hymn.

We are a people who share the news about Jesus with a “Galilean accent”; that is: By the example of our lives.

Amen.

May 17, 2026 – Psalm 97:9 - For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.

Are we alone in the universe? There’s a lot of talk these days about “disclosure.” Isthere life on other planets? Is our government hiding the truth about what is really out there? What does the Bible say about extraterrestrial life forms? There’s nothing in the Bible about extraterrestrials, but the Bible has plenty to say about other life forms, co-existent with the human species here on earth, life forms that live in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 1 refers to them as “rulers,” “authorities,” “powers,” and “dominions.” They are different species of highly intelligent spiritual life forms, capable of messing with our lives and our minds, convincing us that life is out of control; and, indeed, from the purely human perspective, life does seem to be out of control.

The Ascension of our Lord is about Jesus rising above what seems to be out of control; and, from far above it, He can control it.*

It’s when we step out of the power and influence of God’s presence and protection in our lives that we can easily lose sight of the fact that, in spite of how things appear to be, God, in Jesus Christ, is still in control of all of life and all of death.

There are many kinds of situations which can cause us to step away from God’s assuring presence in our lives: sickness, depression, the trauma of losing a loved one to death, conflict with family members, money problems or anything else that clouds our lives to the point where we can’t see things clearly. It’s much like the King James translation of 1st Corinthians 13:12 reads – “For now we see through a glass darkly; but then we shall see face to face.” What’s referred to as “then” – “but then we shall see face to face” - is, usually, thought of as “after death.” That’s when we expect to be able to see things clearly. However, what is really meant by “then” is when, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we attain a time of spiritual maturity; and see through that dark glass, that is; when we can see through those heavenly realms influenced and controlled by spiritual entities gone mad, and can look straight into the face of the Ascended Jesus Christ.

Spiritual maturity is difficult to maintain because those heavenly realms are constantly at war not only with us but with one another as well, fighting for ourdevotion, and the fallout caused by all that infighting makes spiritual perception sometimes all but impossible. All we can see is the smoke and we can, when we are emotionally vulnerable, become convinced that there isn’t anything out there exceptthat smoke, and the threatening voices that come out of that smoke: Those thoughts that plague us telling us to just give up because there’s no use in even trying…there’s no such thing as God, your faith is for naught, Jesus didn’t really exist and if He did, He faked his death on the cross so He could fake His resurrection. (There are self-proclaimed Biblical scholars on YouTube who are teaching that.)

Those voices can convince us that we are stuck here all alone and at the mercy of spiritual entities whose powers are much greater than ours, beings trying to get our attention, by brute force if they have to, because they want to be worshipped. (Psalm 97:9) Some of them are gods, and that’s “gods” with a small “g.” They are the ones called “rulers” in Ephesians 1:21. They are extremely powerful beings, and they have huge followings because they have answers for questions that, when asked the true God, the only answer He gives is silence. Human beings will only tolerate so much mystery, then they want answers. The Ascended Jesus Christ doesn’t say much. A lot of people can’t live with that.

Another class of spiritual entities whose activities cloud the heavenly realms and make it difficult to see the Ascended Jesus Christ is what Ephesians 1:21 calls “authorities.” They are the beings who cause nature to run amuck. It would have been one of those beings who stirred up the storm on the Sea of Galilee that almost drowned the Apostles. “Peace! Be still!” Jesus shouted at that entity and, immediately its power was subdued!

Still another class of spiritual entities who darken the heavenly realms is the “demonic powers;” spiritual entities who delight in causing conflict between friends, family members, spouses and nations. They also stir up trouble in churches.

And the last class of devious spiritual beings mentioned in Ephesians 1:21 is called “the dominion.” No one knows exactly what they are, but, according to the Bible, they work together in large numbers. They are “Legion.”

It is very difficult to navigate through this world without becoming infected by or influenced and confused by all the other life forms that actually exist outside this physical plane, if we don’t keep our eyes fixed on the Ascended Jesus Christ. We cannot navigate safely through this world without His help. Without His direction, we won’t know what to believe; we won’t know what is true and what is not true. We’ll become stuck and we will become overwhelmed by the senselessness of the events around us.

But, take heart, because no matter if we lose sight of Him, He never loses sight of us. Never. All we need do, when we become confused and beaten down by things in this life over which we have no control, is look up because He never takes His eyes off of us. Nothing can eclipse His sight from us. Nothing. “Peace! Be Still!” He shouts; and what was cloudy becomes clear.

“For now we see through a glass darkly,” but that’s never the case for the Ascended Jesus Christ. His power sees through the cloudy heavenly realms and your Jesus always beholds you face to face. Amen.

*Matthew 28:18 - New International Version - In Matthew’s version of the Ascension, we read these words - 18 “Then Jesus came to them (the Apostles) and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.’” Jesus has authority over all those spiritual entities who consider themselves “gods.” Is it any wonder why, in the Gospels, they see Him coming, they start screaming in terror?

May 10, 2026 – John 14:15-21 NIV

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

Again, Jesus said, “On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.”

“I will ask the Father,” Jesus said, “and He will give you another Advocate.”

I know we are used to translating “advocate” as “comforter,” but the word translated as “advocate” can also mean “character witness,” like in a court of law.

Who’s court of law? God’s? Are we constantly having to be defended by the Holy Spirit because God would like nothing more than to punish us because we keep screwing up?

No. That is what happens when MEN turn around and create God in their image. God is not constantly passing judgment on us while the Holy Spirit is repeatedly running interference for us.

It’s not in God’s court of law that the Holy Spirit acts as a character witness for us; it’s in our own personal court of law.

We are constantly passing judgment on ourselves.

Often times people are their own worst enemies and, often times, they’ve been conditioned to be their own worst enemies by their religion.

“Religion” can turn out to be what happens when people create God in their own image. Jesus incarnated into that kind of religion and ended up on a cross.

God is busy loving and presenting people with opportunities to be the presence of Jesus, (the presence of unconditional love) in this world, not busy hashing, and rehashing people’s sins.

We, on the other hand, can become very good at beating ourselves up even after God has said, “Alright already…. I know you’re sorry, but I understand you and I love you unconditionally. So, let’s move on. The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.” (When men turn around and create God in their own image and create a version of Christianity based on that reversal of roles and men, themselves, hold all the positions of authority in that version of Christianity, what results is a “religion” that maintains its authority over people by teaching them to beat themselves up because they are such bad human beings. If you don’t believe me, just ask Martin Luther*. Would a “religion” defined by and in which women held all the positions of authority do the same? I don’t think so, unless they were women who deep down inside wanted to be men.)

I want share with you an experiment by a Harvard professor named Robert Rosenthal. It pertains to this sermon, and I have shared this experiment with you before, but it explains perfectly what I am trying to say.

Professor Rosenthal told the teachers at an elementary school south of San Francisco that he was going to give their students a test that would predict which of the students were about to experience a dramatic growth in their IQ.

Quoting from the article in which I read about this experiment – “After the kids took the test, he then chose from every class several children totally at random. There was nothing at all to distinguish these kids from the other kids, but he told their teachers that the test predicted the kids who were on the verge of what he called ‘an intense intellectual bloom.’ As he followed the children over the next two years, Rosenthal discovered that the teachers' expectations of these kids really did affect the students. ‘If teachers had been led to expect greater gains in IQ, then increasingly, those kids gained more IQ’.”

How did that happen? What enabled those children, picked at random, to increase their IQs?

Professor Rosenthal discovered that the teachers treated the children the teachers were told were “on the verge of an intense intellectual bloom” differently than the other students.

Quoting again from that article, Professor Rosenthal “…found that expectations affect teachers' moment-to-moment interactions with the children they teach in a thousand almost invisible ways.”

He goes on to say, “It's not magic, it's not mental telepathy. It's very likely these thousands of different ways of treating people in small ways every day."

As our “character witness,” the Holy Spirit is constantly trying to affirm us, and encourage us, even when we find it hard to believe in ourselves.

You’re never going to catch God treating you like you’re a loser.

In his sermon to the men in Athens and speaking to them about their monument to “the unknown god”, St. Paul quoted one of their own Greek philosophers and said, “In Him, (that “unknown God”), we live and move and have our being.” Then Paul says, “As your own poets have said, ‘We are His offspring!’””

Indeed, we are His offspring, and what kind of a parent would go around treating their offspring with contempt to try to make those children feel like losers?

God believes in you and is proud of you and will do everything in His power to enable you to become everything He knows you are capable of becoming.

God knows that we become the way we are treated and God is our biggest fan.

May God inspire us to treat others the same way God, the Holy Spirit, treats us; because the way you see people is the way you treat them, and the way you treat them is what they become.

And the way you treat yourself, is what YOU become!

Amen.

* Martin Luther's Practices of Self-Penance

Self-Flagellation (whipping oneself)

Martin Luther practiced self-flagellation as a form of penance.

He believed that this physical suffering would help him atone for his sins.

Spiritual Disciplines

Luther dedicated himself to several rigorous spiritual disciplines, which included:

Fasting: He often abstained from food as a means of spiritual purification.

Long Hours of Prayer: He spent significant time in prayer, seeking to connect with God.

Physical Suffering: His practices often led to physical discomfort and suffering, which he viewed as necessary for his spiritual journey.

These actions were part of Luther's intense struggle with his conscience and his desire for salvation.

May 3 – 2026 - Acts 7:56 – “Look!” Stephen said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God!”

Eleven times in the New Testament we are told that Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father. Eleven times. So, the New Testament makes it quite clear that Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God the Father and, according to Hebrews 7:25, while Jesus is sitting there, He is praying for us, ALL of us, and non-stop.

However, in this morning’s first lesson, Acts 7:54-60, when Stephen is being stoned to death and raises his eyes to Heaven, he says, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

Why did Jesus stand up?

To tell you the truth, He couldn’t help Himself. What was happening to Stephen literally brought Jesus to His feet.

What is translated as “standing,” means “cause to stand.” It also means, “to stand still,” “to stand immovable,” “to stand firm.” And it means, “to stand ready or prepared.”

Ready for what?

Prepared for what?

Ready to receive Stephen into Heaven.

Prepared to take Stephen into that place Jesus had prepared for Stephen in His Father’s House.

In this morning Gospel Reading Jesus tells His disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled*. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go** and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.”

What is translated as “dwelling places,” can also mean “places to stay,” places “to continue to be present,” and, yes, (in case you were wondering), that word can also mean “mansion.”

In John 14:23, when Jesus says, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and We will come to them and make our home with them,” the word used for “home” here is the same word Jesus uses for “dwelling places” when Jesus says, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” We are the “dwelling places!” Indeed, we are the “mansions!” God considers you a mansion! Yes. You!

And “with,” when Jesus says, “and We will come to them and make our home withthem,” can also mean “in.” “We will come to them and make our home in them.”

So basically, what Jesus is telling us is that if we belong to Him, Heaven takes up residence within us. We are, at the same time, in Heaven and the building blocks of Heaven and God is never finished building/constructing Heaven. Building Heaven is a work in progress and everyone we meet is one of God’s building blocks for Heaven and that is why He tells us in Matthew 28:19 – NIV 19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” But, let’s face it: Before they’re going to commit to being baptized, before they are going to allow God to use them as building blocks for the City of God, they are going to have to experience the presence of God in the here and now and in such a way that reveals to them just how loving and kind God truly isand how absolutely amazing God truly is and how much God believes*** in them.

As it turns out, God facilitates that experience for them through you.

I conclude with these words from a story I included in the May 2026 Trinity Newsletter - Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

Allow God to use YOU to let people know how important they truly are to God. He wants to use them to continue building the City of God.

Amen.

*” troubled” – That Greek word also means to move back and forth. It’s being so “troubled” or worried that you are sitting there with your face in your hands and rocking back and forth because you are so desperately worried.

**“I go” – That Greek word means” to pursue the journey on which one has entered, to continue on one's journey.” Every moment of Jesus’ life was about us. About YOU. His incarnation was a journey for Him and what motivated Him to keep on going was the vision of your face in His mind. And He sees everyone’s face: The face of every human being ever born, yet to be born and those precious individuals who, for one reason or another, never made it into the womb or died in the womb.

In Jesus’ mind, every human being who was born in what we call “the past”, “the present” and “the future”, is accounted for and present. And those individuals who, for one reason or another, never made it into the womb or died in the womb, or died shortly after birth have a special place in the City of God. There is a beautiful park and playground next to the entrance to the City of God. That is where those babies grow up and play while watching for their parent/’s arrival and those babies, now happy, carefree children, are the first to go running with arms wide open to greet them upon their arrival. (If you close your eyes and listen, you can hear those children laughing and playing.)

Those reunions inspire some of the most beautiful music in Heaven. Angels write and sing songs about those reunions.

***When somebody tells me that they don’t believe in God, I say, “That’s ok. God believes in you.”

A church is a place where people go to be reminded not that they are wretched sinners, but to be reminded that, through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, they have become the building blocks of the City of God.
