Robert Raikes… a name that most people have never heard of, but just because his name is unknown… his progress for the kingdom is still taking place in church buildings still to this day.
He was not a famous preacher or theologian, he was not an out of this world singer, he was a simple man, with a special mission and drive that was directed towards the workers of the lower class. Observing the children who worked 12 hours a day in the local factories, he saw them cursing, causing disruption in Gods house, he began to feel the lord calling him to do something no man had never done.
Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon, George Washington become the first president of the United States of America, and Robert Raikes was the first man to ever lead a Sunday school class.
Why is Sunday school important in this world today? For me it became the roots of my childhood. Learning stories like David and Goliath. Singing songs that worshiped the name of Jesus. It was more than just a pre service lesson, it was the very thing that helped shape me into the man that I am today.
I have prayed fervently for God to bless this class, and I can already see his hand on it. It’s worth waking up early because you get more of Jesus. It’s worth sacrificing time because you get more time with the father. Friendships and unbreakable bonds are made in these atmospheres, and more importantly souls who don’t know the lord, learn about who he is and the importance of what he did on the cross.
I invite you to share in the comments your favorite Sunday school memories, and as we step into this new beginning with our youth and young adults, let’s not step out in fear, let’s step out in faith believing that the best is yet to come.
