Niagara Gazette March 11, 2008 - City's newest parish By Don Glynn

The new church formed by the merger of Sacred Heart and St. Bishop Edward U. Kimec of the Buffalo Catholic Diocese announced the name change was based on the recommendation of the transition team that included members from both of the former parishes.

“St. Raphael was the name of the original parish founded at the Sacred Heart si

te and both Sacred Heart and St. Teresa parishes developed from that foundation,” the bishop said. “As the saint of healing and the patron of travelers, St. Raphael is a most appropriate name for this time in our church and in the particular location of Niagara Falls.”

In the Catholic faith, St. Raphael is known as one of the seven archangels standing before the throne of the Lord. He also is honored as the patron of the blind and of nurses and doctors. His feast day is celebrated on Sept. 29. A diocesan spokesman said that the Rev. Ivan Skenderovic, the new pastor of the merged parish, will celebrate an opening Mass at 4 p.m. April 19 at the present site of St. Teresa, 3840 Macklem Ave. Among the new pastor’s previous assignments was St. Anthony’s in Batavia. Teresa’s, established in 1930, most recently had 702 families, according to the 2008 Catholic Directory. Sacred Heart at South Avenue and 11th Street, founded in 1854, had 617 families registered.

Mental Health Workshop:
Support for Parents
Happy Feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux!

With two saintly parents (Ss. Louis & Zélie) and four siblings who answered the call to religious life, it is clear that St. Thérèse saint grew up in a loving family that adored Jesus and took their Catholic faith seriously. What an inspiration to us, raising families of our own, to know that holiness in family life is possible when we cooperate with God's grace. We know that this young Doctor of the Church is spending her time in heaven doing good on earth, and she reminds us that our primary vocation is always to love.

St. Thérèse, Little Flower, pray for us!

The Catholic Parenting Initiative would like to invite you attend our upcoming event, Mental Health Workshop: Support for Parents, taking place on Saturday, October 11th at Our Lady of Peace in Clarence. We will be hosting a dinner and panel with local Catholic therapists from 5:30-7:30 pm (following the 4:30 pm Mass). M. Mookie C. Manalili, LICSW will be joined by Russ Blackstone, LMHC, Dan Lawson, LMHC, and Anna Ottaviano, LMSW.

You spoke, we listened. Many of the parents who took our survey over the past year noted that mental health struggles were one of the primary obstacles to passing on the Faith to their children. In response to this great need, we wanted to provide you all with the opportunity to talk with experts. to ask your questions, and to learn how to better support your children (and your own mental health needs). This session will be the first of many opportunities for parents and caregivers to come together and learn how to better accompany their children and one another in the vocation of parenting.

If you are planning to attend, please RSVP at the bottom of this email.
We hope to see you there!

In the arms of Our Lady,
Riley Emer
Director, Catholic Parenting Initiative

Hi Everyone,
Here’s the latest update on our former St. Raphael Parish:

The church has been sold and is now owned by a Baptist church. Fr. Luke is still working on moving the remaining statues to various locations. War Memorial to join another at Holy Trinity. Pieta to join the stations at St. Bernard’s. St. Teresa will hopefully be coming to live in the gardens at my house. Respect Life and St. Raphael to be stored for now at St. Peter’s.

The rectory has also been sold and the sale will be closing very soon.

The school has not yet been sold. There are a couple interested parties, but no firm deal yet. The biggest obstacle has been that it is zoned for a school; not residential or commercial.

Finally, I am now a member of the new Pastoral Council for our family of parishes (St. Peter’s/Immaculate Conception). If you have any concerns going forward reach out to me and I will try to address them.

In faith,
Maria Gleason

FYI:
If you happened to drive past St. Raphael’s this weekend you might have noticed this.
It was NOT vandalism!
Although it was poor timing to start this weekend, rest assured that this is a planned project. The Stations and the Pieta are both being moved to the cemetery at St. Bernard’s Parish in Youngstown. The other statues and monuments will also be relocated to other appropriate locations in the near future.
I will try to keep everyone updated with posts here. Feel free to share and ask questions anytime.
