Newtown Square Friends Meeting

Newtown Square Friends Meeting Meeting for silent Quaker worship at this site ... since 1711! Sundays at 10:00 a.m. Quaker values and Quaker worship have appeal, even in the 21st century.

As we head into our 4th century at the same location in Newtown Square, we need to embrace the technology that speaks to a wider audience. Who would not like to have an hour a week to sit in silence and contemplate the world, and our role in it? And where better to do it than an old stone meeting house in use for that purpose since 1711?

What is Your Purpose? Why Are You Here?

We all need purpose - a reason to rise each morning, an inspiration or goal to help us focus during the day, and something to be grateful for before we sleep.

But how do we find our purpose? And can it dramatically change over time?

Psychological tests ask you to imagine yourself a year, or ten, or twenty years from now, and consider:

What am I doing?

What do I care deeply about?

Who am I with?

And why?

The why is always key, because it often reveals our core interests, skills, and reasons for caring.

You may believe “I’m here to help others,” or “I want to protect the environment.” Or a million other, more granular goals. But how does that knowledge even emerge? How do we listen for it?

Here, in this 310-year-old house of worship, come and share your thoughts about why we’re here, on this beautiful orb, in the vastness of the Milky Way.

This came int he mail to the Meeting House, and I wanted to pass it along. This is one of those curious characters in Quaker history - Benjamin Lay - born a dwarf to Quaker parents in London, was exposed to and horrified by the treatment of slaves in Barbados, and became one of the earliest Quaker abolitionists.

Want to know more about him? There is a theatrical presentation on his life visiting the Quintessence Theater in Germanton from May 1-8th. See Flyer for details. Pass the word!

I was with a cousin this week who recalled her grandmother reciting this verse at bedtime when she was a young girl. Wondering if any of you have ever come across it? She thought her grandmother might have come from a Quaker family but the answer is lost in the mist of history. Here is the verse:

Quaker meeting has begun
No more laughing, no more fun
If you laugh and show your teeth
Something surely must be done!

Introducing: Monthly Meeting Profile Videos

We know that spiritual seeking has moved online along with theological debate, church-shopping, and a host of other things. If Quaker meetings are to make themselves find-able, the first step is to extend our invitation in the most visible, most personal way possible: online video.

That's why I, along with videographer Mark Pratt-Russum, traveled to Portland, Oregon this spring to interview members of Multnomah Friends meeting. This is the pilot video in what will become an ongoing video series featuring local monthly meetings.

We asked Friends at Multnomah how the meeting has changed their lives, and what keeps them coming back. Some of what they said brought tears to my eyes.

Our goal is that anyone seeking spiritual community in Portland, Oregon will discover this video. After watching, they'll feel like they've already gotten their first visit out of the way. And maybe they'll even start to fall in love with Multnomah Meeting, as I did.

Take a look below and let us know how we did!
