In the beginning...

What do these words make you think of? Some people think of the first words of Genesis, describing the creation of the heavens and the earth. Others might start to hum a Christmas carol as they remember the words they hear every year: "In the beginning was the Word...and the Word became flesh and dwelled among us." Still others find themselves immediately overwhelmed with all of the things that go along with the beginning of a new school year.

This Sunday, we will begin our program year with a reflection on all that God created in the beginning, God's ongoing creative work in our midst, and our identity as a part of God's creation that God called good.

Intergenerational Worship is at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The prophets can sometimes sound like drama queens, with thier over the top language and dire warnings. But that is mostly because God doesn't wake up a prophet in the middle of the night to tell the king, "Everything is just fine." Prophets are usually summoned to action when something is wrong. Last week, we heard about when prophets show up to call out injustice. They essentially say, "Don't you ever do that again!" This week, we will hear a very different message. When things go wrong, life falls apart, and everything feels hard, God sends prophets to remind us of God's love and presence with us always. Join us on Sunday as we give thanks for this important message from God.

Our bells are on their way! Created in honor of one of our most famous pastors, the bells will be restored to their perch in The America Tower at the end of the year.

Samuel Francis Smith wrote the hymn "America" in 1831, an accomplishment that made him one of Newton's most famous residents in his lifetime. In 1842 he accepted the post as First Baptist Church in Newton's pastor. The tower was named in his honor -- and you can see the now-faint inscription celebrating him on the largest of the bells. The bells, created in an 1842-forge in what is now Watervliet, NY, will be refurbished in Ohio.
