May 24th is Pentecost Sunday. "Pentecost" is from the Greek word for "Fifty." Pentecost Sunday is 50 days after the first Sunday of the Easter Season (Easter is a "season" with 7 Easter Sundays) and it is the "birthday" of the Church when the gift of the Spirit that makes the new community called the Church possible. In the Hebrew Scriptures, Pentecost was 50 days after Passover, and it was the festival of "first fruits," the beginning of the harvest. The gift of the Spirit and the Church are the "first fruits" of the larger "harvest" to come, the new heaven and new earth. What we experience now is "just enough" to give us hope for the full harvest that is coming. In the Gospel reading from John 7, Jesus speaks of the Spirit as the "living water" that quenches thirst.

May 3, 2026, the 5th Sunday of Easter will begin a series entitled, "The Bible Is Not Enough." This will be at least a two week series, perhaps 3-5 weeks. The Yellow Frame choir, led by director of music, David Scott, will sing the anthem, "Lift Up Your Voice," composed by Brian Strain. For our Affirmation of Faith, we will use a portion of the PC(USA) Confession of 1967 which reads, "The reconciling work of Jesus was the supreme crisis in the life of humankind. His cross and resurrection become personal crisis and present hope for women and men when the gospel is proclaimed and believed. In this experience, the Spirit brings God’s forgiveness to all, moves people to respond in faith, repentance, and obedience, and initiates the new life in Christ. The new life finds its direction in the life of Jesus, his deeds and words, his struggles against temptation, his compassion, his anger, and his willingness to suffer death. The teaching of apostles and prophets guides men and women in living this life, and the Christian community nurtures and equips them for their ministries. The members of the church are emissaries of peace and seek the good of all in cooperation with powers and authorities in politics, culture, and economics. But they have to fight against pretensions and injustices when these same powers endanger human welfare. Their strength is in their confidence that God’s purpose rather than human schemes will finally prevail"

Based on photos from a recent trip to El Salvador by Becky Paulson and Roccio Sanchez-Snyder, tomorrow's worship service will be, in part, a slide show focused on Holy Week as observed by Roman Catholics in El Salvador (and many places around the world) and how this contrasts with most PC(USA) congregations. In addition, Becky will be hosting coffee hour, with help from Joy Sullivan, that will feature coffee from El Salvador, art work, and other delicious treats from El Salvador. The Ladies Aid Spring Rummage Sale is approaching. Donations can be brought to church starting Monday, 4/27 thru Thursday, 4/30 9am to Noon. Please don’t bring Furniture, TVs, VHS players and tapes, computers and their components, electronics, Nat’l Geographic magazines, encyclopedias, baby cribs, car seats, large Fisher Price outdoor toys, bed pans, commodes, hard sided suitcases, household cleaners or chemicals, garden sprays, insecticides or herbicides, sharp objects (ie: kitchen knives).

The sale is Friday, May 1st, 9-4, and Saturday, May 2nd, 9-3. Shop for clothes, decor, jewelry, kitchenware, and more, and also you can buy a hot dog, dessert, and drinks and other delicious treats. See you on May 1st and 2nd.
