As a member of the Church of Christ are you weary with what you see happening in your local congregation? Do you see that what is going on is not what the Bible teaches? Are you wondering what to do or where you can go?

I’m Steven Deaton, one of the elders at the Newton church of Christ. We want you to know we stand in the “old paths.” We strive diligently to speak as the oracles of God as we are told to do in 1 Peter 4:11. Our aim is to be a New Testament church; a congregation that is grounded in God’s word, upholds the truth, and respects Bible authority.

Sadly, not all congregations that identify themselves as a “church of Christ” follow the New Testament. Rather, they have drifted away by following the will of men. Jesus warned about this in Matthew 15:7-9 where He said, “Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

Leaders in some congregations have abandoned the faith and are taking members further from the Lord. They have abdicated their duty and harmed the cause of Christ in the process.

The Lord is aware of this and knows those of you who are troubled by these things. He loves you and wants you to be built up. As 2 Peter 2:9 says, He is ready and willing to deliver you.

You do not have to stay in a situation where truth is not upheld; one where sin is accepted; one where your soul is being sapped of strength.

We are here to help and encourage you. The Newton church of Christ is Scripturally organized with elders and deacons. We have a healthy mix of ages and a membership that is friendly and welcoming. Our Bible classes are centered on God’s word and foster healthy discussions. Likewise, sermons are grounded in Scripture – We preach the word as 2 Timothy 4:2 states.

Learn more about us on our website or visit one of our services. We meet Sunday at 10 AM for class and 11 AM for worship. We meet again on Wednesday at 7 PM for Bible classes.

You may also reach out to me by email [email protected] or phone 828-465-3009

I’ll leave you with this from Galatians 6:9: do not grow weary while doing good, for in due season you shall reap if you do not lose heart.

Are you a member of a church of Christ, but bewildered and confused by what you see going on? Does it bother you to see departures from the word of God, the acceptance of sin, and lack of will to follow the Lord in all things?

It is sad, but some churches that claim to belong to Christ have drifted into error. Members of these churches now find themselves questioning what is going on and why.

Paul wrote that shepherds are to “be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict” those who are in sin (Titus 1:9). But leaders in some churches are failing. Instead of leading the congregation in truth and holding members accountable, they avoid responsibility.

When this happens, it can be very discouraging.

Take heart. There are others striving to stand for the truth. The Newton church of Christ is a congregation of people committed to following the “old paths.”

Our aim is to “speak as the oracles of God” (1 Peter 4:11) and abide in the doctrine of Christ (2 John 9).

If that is your aim and you simply want to be a part of a congregation that follows the New Testament in all things, then we want to talk to you.

Call, email, visit our website, or join us for one of our services.

Is Christianity Logical?

Some claim it is foolishness and only those with “blind faith” could possibly accept it. They say reason and rationality must be cast aside; evidence and “science” must be rejected. Is this true? This episode examine the question, “is Christianity logical?” We talk about the dominant Western view, the idea that God wants reason, evidence behind Christianity, and the fact that Jesus was logical. Israel refused to enter Canaan land 40 years before the eventual invasion. They initially refused to go in because they feared the people and were intimidated by the fortified cities (Numbers 13:28, 29). Their lack of faith doomed a generation to wandering and eventual death in the desert. Their children, however, learned the lesson and became a generation of faith.

After being encouraged by the Lord and the people, Joshua began the process to invade and conquer the Promised Land (Joshua 2-5). In Joshua 6 we see the opening of a long campaign to take the land — a campaign that was partly military, but mainly religious. It was a religious campaign as it was part of God’s plan of salvation; a fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. In this chapter we see Israel easily take the city of Jericho; a display of God’s power and manifestation of His grace.

Would you be surprised to learn that faith alone does not save you?

James 2:24 says, “You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.”

The popular doctrine of salvation by faith alone leads people to a false sense of security – thinking their soul is saved when it is not.

Thankfully, the truth is easily discovered in God’s word.

We invite you to watch our five-part series on the Plan of Salvation as revealed in the Bible.

You will be able to check what we say with the Scripture to see for yourself what God says.

This lesson is on the subject of death. We consider a number of questions regarding death including what it is, what happens when we die, should we fear death, and more.
