Sravasti Abbey

Sravasti Abbey A Buddhist monastery where monks, nuns, and lay students learn, practice, and live Buddha’s teachings. Thank you! https://sravastiabbey.org

Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron founded Sravasti Abbey in Newport, Washington in 2003. Sravasti Abbey's mission is to nurture a flourishing monastic community where learning and practicing Buddha's teachings cultivates peace in the hearts of the residents, visitors and in the world. Buddhist monasteries are an essential component for the scriptural and lived teachings of Buddhism to be sustained far int

o the future. Our vision is that the Buddhist teachings we cultivate here will last for thousands of years. Throughout the ages, monasteries have been centers of Buddhist learning and practice, places that have benefited monastics, lay practitioners, and society. Sravasti Abbey continues that tradition, providing a quiet environment conducive for Buddhist study and meditation. Fully ordained monastics, novices, and trainees live here. We welcome visiting lay and monastic practitioners who wish to live, work, and practice in a community setting. The monastics of Sravasti Abbey endeavor to live generously through dedicating our lives to the Buddha's teachings, practicing them earnestly, and offering them to others. We trust that people will value our way of life and work and will respond generously by providing what is needed to live and to spread the Dharma in a modern society. Together with the lay community, we are building facilities where all of us can study and practice the Buddha's teaching. Please Note: Venerable Thubten Chodron and residents at the Abbey are not active on Facebook. If you would like to share your personal ideas or views about the teachings, or ask questions, please email the Abbey directly.

Sometimes, hearing is already a beginning.

This morning, Venerable Thubten Chodron reminded us why resounding the sūtra matters: even when its meaning is not yet fully clear to us, hearing the Buddha’s words can plant virtuous seeds in the mindstream—seeds that may ripen when the right conditions come together.

In just a few hours, Sravasti Abbey will begin the full English recitation of The Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, in partnership with 84000.

Join the livestream and be part of this historic resounding. (Links in the comments👇🏻)

Those wrapped objects are pechas—traditional Tibetan books—of the words of the Buddha and the commentaries. They flank the main altar in the Buddha Hall.

The majority of these essential texts are not yet available in English. An organization called 84000 is well underway in translating all of them into English and making them freely available.

Sravasti Abbey and 84000 are collaborating to recite The Transcendent State of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, available in English for the first time.
