Most frequently asked questions part 2:
-Why do you have to have a Confession of Faith?
Every church does and should have their own confession of faith. A confession of faith was initially created to express what fundamentally a local church believes both in primary things and secondary things. It’s the best way to publicly affirm and deny any thing that may go unaddressed.
-Why Hymns and not more contemporary music?
God has made music to be a very powerful means of communication. Songs are to be used regularly. But they also are designed to make truth memorable. Much like catechism, it embeds things in the mind through the medium of rythm and rhyme. Therefore, we want our songs to be rich in theology and also to be accessible by all people. Most hymns can be easily memorized or learned almost immediately. Also, we have found that most, not all, contemporary Christian music is either directly or indirectly influenced by some of our modern day false teachers and heretics. When we sing their songs, we are running a significant risk of affirming them before our congregation. Another point is that most, not all, contemporary Christian music is more focused on being successful in the sphere of the world than in the building up of the body. It commonly sacrifices eternal truth for other things. In order to keep things simple, we lean on the tried and true hymns of grace.
-Are you political?
The Scriptures, the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ are all things that impact the political sphere. While we do not practice using the Word of God to preach/teach politics, we do allow the Word of God to speak flat-footed to the politics of our day. One person once said that “politics are merely just an expression of one’s ethics.” Indeed, and today’s “ethics” are wildly in rebellion against God’s Holy Word, therefore, as good undershepherds of the flock, we must speak to them accordingly.
-What about growth?
This is an area where “growth” must be defined. If it means for spiritual maturity in the life of the church, then we are hard set on that becoming a reality. If it means to increase the number of people in our body, then only if that is what the Lord desires for us. While we excitedly welcome new faces, we know that our goals are quite distinct from many churches and therefore may seem off-brand. However, we strive for biblical accuracy and faithfulness over the numerical and financial growth of the church. John MacArthur once said “we aim to take care of the depth and let God handle the breadth.”
