5-Day Devotional: Eyes to See, Hearts to Serve

Day 1: Compassion That Sees

Reading: Matthew 9:35-38

Devotional: Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion on them. Notice that compassion begins with seeing—truly seeing people beyond their surface. How often do we scroll past pain rather than stopping to acknowledge it? Jesus didn't just notice suffering; He was moved in His innermost being. The Greek word splagchnizomai describes a gut-level response, not shallow sympathy. Today, ask God to give you eyes like Jesus—eyes that see the harassed and helpless around you. The lonely neighbor. The overwhelmed coworker. The struggling family member. Compassion costs time and convenience, but it reflects the heart of Christ. Before you can serve, you must see. Who has God placed in your path today?

5-Day Devotional: The Great Physician Calls

Day 5: Forgiven and Sent

Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

Devotional: Matthew was dead in his sins, but Jesus made him alive. Jesus called him, healed him, gave him new life, and then sent him out to invite others. This is the pattern of grace: Jesus finds us, forgives us, transforms us, and commissions us.
You are not who you once were. Through the cross, resurrection, Word, and Sacraments, the Great Physician has found you and forgiven you. You've been raised to new life. Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Now Jesus sends you into the world as an ambassador of reconciliation. You carry the same invitation Matthew offered: "Come and see the One who forgives sins. Come and see the One who welcomes sinners. Come and see the Great Physician." You are a forgiven sinner with good news for other sinners. Go and tell them.

5-Day Devotional: The Great Physician Calls

Day 4: Mercy, Not Sacrifice

Reading: Hosea 6:6; Micah 6:6-8

Devotional: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice," Jesus quoted from Hosea. The Pharisees focused on religious performance—the right sacrifices, the right company, the right appearances. But they missed the heart of God: mercy.

Religion without mercy becomes exclusionary. It creates insiders and outsiders, the worthy and the unworthy. But Jesus came to break down those walls. He came for sinners, not the self-righteous. He came to show mercy, not to demand perfection.

Every Sunday we confess: "I, a poor, miserable sinner." This isn't self-hatred; it's honest acknowledgment. We're saying, "Lord, I'm sick and I need healing. I need Your forgiveness. I need You." You can't be healed until you admit you need a physician. Stop pretending. Stop minimizing. Bring your sin to the Great Physician who specializes in mercy.

5-Day Devotional: The Great Physician Calls

Day 3: Come and See

Reading: John 1:43-46

Devotional: Matthew's evangelism strategy was beautifully simple: "Come and see." He didn't have theological degrees or perfect answers. He simply invited his friends to meet the One who had changed his life. This is evangelism at its purest—one person telling another about Jesus.

You don't need seminary training to share the gospel. You don't need to win arguments or have all the answers. You simply need to say, "Come and see what Jesus has done for me." Philip used these same words with Nathanael. It's an invitation, not an interrogation.

Who in your life needs to hear "come and see"? What relationships, circles of influence, or opportunities has God given you? Use what you have—a dining room, a church basement, a coffee shop, your home. Jesus is still calling people through ordinary people like you and me.

5-Day Devotional: The Great Physician Calls

Day 2: The Guest List of Grace
Reading: Luke 15:1-7

Devotional: Matthew threw a dinner party, and the guest list shocked everyone: tax collectors, sinners, outcasts. Right in the middle sat Jesus. The Pharisees criticized, but Jesus explained: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick."

Sharing a meal in Jesus' time meant acceptance and relationship. Jesus wasn't just tolerating these people; He was pursuing them. He came to seek and save the lost. The gospel isn't for people who think they have it all together—it's for those who know they don't.

Are you trying to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus? Stop. Come as you are. Jesus doesn't say, "Get healthy, then come." He says, "Come to me so I can make you healthy." There's a world of difference.

5-Day Devotional: The Great Physician Calls

Day 1: The Call That Changes Everything

Reading: Matthew 9:9-13

Devotional: Matthew sat in his tax booth, an outcast among his own people. Yet when Jesus walked by, He didn't see a traitor—He saw a patient in need of healing. "Follow me," Jesus said. Two simple words that changed everything. No prerequisites. No probationary period. Just an invitation from the Great Physician.
What "tax booth" are you sitting in today? What sin, failure, or reputation keeps whispering that you don't belong? Jesus sees you exactly as you are—every sin, every regret—and He still calls you. His invitation isn't based on your worthiness but on His grace. The first step toward healing is recognizing you're sick and responding to His call. Today, hear Jesus speaking those same words to you: "Follow me."

5-Day Devotional: Commissioned by Grace

Day 5: Never Alone in the Mission

Reading: Matthew 28:16-20

Devotional: Jesus concludes the Great Commission with the promise that sustains every missionary, evangelist, and ordinary Christian: "I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Always. Not sometimes. Not when you're strong or eloquent or confident. Always. When conversations get awkward, He's there. When you face rejection, He stands beside you. When doubt creeps in, He remains faithful. This promise has no expiration date, no conditions, no fine print. The risen Christ who conquered death accompanies you into every divine appointment and difficult discussion. You don't go alone into the world with this gospel. The One with all authority goes with you, empowering your words, opening hearts, and working in ways you cannot see. Today, step forward boldly, knowing the ever-present Christ walks with you into His mission.

5-Day Devotional: Commissioned by Grace

Day 4: Planting Seeds, Trusting God
Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:5-9

Devotional: The pressure to "convert" people can paralyze us into silence. But Paul liberates us with a beautiful truth: some plant, some water, but God gives the growth. Your responsibility isn't creating faith—that's God's work. Your job is faithfulness in the moment He's given you. Maybe you plant a seed through a kind word. Perhaps you water through consistent friendship. Possibly you invite someone to church, not knowing what God is preparing in their heart. Release the outcome to Him. Success isn't measured by immediate conversions but by obedient witness. Not every conversation will lead to baptism, and that's okay. You're a co-worker with God, not the Savior. Today, be faithful in the small things. Speak truth when opportunities arise. Trust God with the harvest you may never see.
