you get what you’ve always got.

I’m done with that. I’m taking chances. I’m letting fear be my friend but not my boss.

I saw this question on my Facebook scroll the other day.
“Why can’t I say no?”

So I will answer from my experience and understanding of scripture and you the reader can do with it what you will.
I was not asked to answer this question but have had to answer it for myself in the past.

First, we must understand love. If we don’t we will come up with all kinds of explanations and opinions for everything.

”Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”“
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭37‬-‭40‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This is the foundation of our life in Christ. Religion won’t do. Fear won’t do. Acquiescence won’t do.

Love is the springboard for every yes and every no. Hopefully you have given your ”yes” to God and accepted the gift of forgiveness and eternal life through Christ. This brings us into right relationship with God and makes it possible to keep the first commandment. To love God with all of our heart, soul and mind.

When we love it looks like love.
When it’s a transaction it looks like a transaction.
There is a difference.
Love says I want to please the one I love. I want to make sure my yes and my no are in accordance with his will and will bring honor to the one I love.

A transaction looks like if I do this then you will do this.

Acquiescence says ok I will give you my yes with reluctance.

My personal experience and my experience with many women is they say yes when they would rather say no. Not because they can’t form the word “no” rather because they are afraid of the rejection or opinion of the one they are responding to.

That is fear and according to scripture “there is no fear in love”. 1 John 4:18

It’s good to say yes when you are able to help someone. But it should always come from a place of love. That means I love myself and this will bless me to serve in this way and I love this person and am blessed to serve them. If your yes does not demonstrate love to yourself and the other person then it likely should have been a “no” instead.

This is not to say your yes will always be convenient. But it should always come from a place of love. First to the Lord our God and then to your neighbor AS YOURSELF. (Emphasis on as yourself)

Otherwise, your yes could actually be sin. And no would have been the more loving response.

Selah.

I don’t know when vintage glassware became art to me only that it has. Yesterday I ran in quickly to a thrift store on my way home and found these three vintage Libbey gold leaf glasses from the 60’s. They were .75 each.

They now sit on the leaf tray I thrifted a couple of weeks ago. I love them. These little things in life don’t matter much in the grand scheme of things but God still has a hand in blessing us with what makes us smile. Love does that.

I don’t need three gold leaf vintage glasses from the 60’s. But what I do need is my heart to heal and God knows how to get my attention with things that don’t matter much to anyone but me and him.

In seasons of loss and disappointment it’s easy to get self focused or pain focused I should say. When our hearts are hurting it’s hard to be talked out of it with words like “stop thinking about it”, “it’s time to move on” or “this too will pass”.

I know that God told Israel to move on after 30 days of mourning for Moses but what do you do when 30 days isn’t enough?

I know many are in seasons of loss or disappointment that have lasted much longer. I know how difficult it is to rebuild. But for me these glasses speak volumes about how God restores us.

They are approximately 65 years old. They are delicate, glass in fact that breaks easily. It’s amazing that they survived 65 years with very little sign of wear and that now they are still being used for their original purpose in my home.

Every time I drink from them or even see them sitting in all of their beauty I will be reminded that God restores. No matter how many times they were thrown away or passed on because they were no longer of use. They are now in a place of honor in my home because of their beauty, because I found them where they had been discarded, and I saw they still had value.

That is what God does for us. Look around you in your loss or disappointment. How is God speaking to you? You are not forgotten or discarded. It’s a season of refining. Soon you will once again be restored and once again reflect the glory and beauty of his presence in your life!

”What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.”“
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭28‬:‭15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

About two weeks ago I received this beautiful book from a dear friend. It is titled “Women Holding Things”.

Each page is a simple statement or story and an illustration of women with some of the things women hold. It’s exquisite, and thought provoking and incredibly difficult at times.

One of the pages is “Woman Holding Up”
I speak to women every day that are women holding up, just holding up!

Women who are being wives and moms and bosses and workers and teachers and cooks and house cleaners and problem solvers and homework helpers and taxis and supporters and organizers and gardeners and bill payers and laundry keepers and grocery shoppers and meal planners and time keepers and listeners and encouragers and that’s in the course of a day. One day! Every day!

So we don’t need to wonder why they are women holding up.

God created women with such beauty and detail and capacity that we can do these things but his intent was not that we do them to the detriment of health and strength and sanity and the enjoyment of life.

Women nurture. In my recent inquiry it was the thing most mentioned by women as their greatest feminine quality and also mentioned by men as the most admired quality of the women they love.

To nurture is the process of caring for and encouraging the growth or development of someone or something.

We have to make room for what is most beautiful as it is also most needed. And all of the things mentioned above may be included in the process of nurturing but not all at once and all of the time.

We need each other. God saw and planned for relationship with him first and a spouse, as a member of a family and the body of Christ. Never alone just holding up.

Sometimes correction is needed. Based on the stories I see and hear from women just in my community sometimes is now. Let’s be deliberate, let’s ask the men in our lives for help, lets support each other in community and church and let’s do better than ”just holding up”!

”All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.“
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Woman
Warning: Long and vulnerable

I was reminded of something today. I think I have apologized for the better part of my life for being a woman. I may not have said the exact words “I'm sorry” however to appease the men around me I have had to subdue so much of my feminine characteristics.

It started with my dad actually. In fairness to him I believe he was trying to help me. He knew it would be difficult to be such a young mom but when given the choice to have my son or have an abortion I chose to have my son.

So my dad was always pushing me to be stronger, to fight harder, to work longer. If he saw a tear he told me to straighten up. I didn't have time to cry. I just needed to figure out my next step.

It's amazing to me that here i am 50 years later and I'm just now doing something about it. Or maybe it’s the first opportunity I have had time to honestly face it.

I think it's because I've been so busy with my life. I haven't really had time to consider things but now I do. And today I decided, “I don't want to apologize for being a girl anymore.”

I feel deeply. I like having conversations. I like being reassured that I am doing something right. I like feeling loved. I like beauty, I like seeing it and I like creating it. I like to feel safe. I like to feel seen and heard. I like to help others. I don’t want to make all the decisions. I don’t know a lot of things that seem natural to other women. Like make up and how to dress up. And many other things. But I will spare those who are still reading.

I actually want to embrace the idea of being the feminine creature God created me to be. I asked him a few years ago why everything had to always be so hard. God answered as clearly as I have ever heard him “because you were meant for softer things”

I want the softer things

On Facebook the other day I saw the question “who are you allowed to be softest with?” The truth is I've never been allowed to be soft with anyone. Whether that is real or imagined doesn’t change the outcome.

There is a part of me that is wanting to be known, wanting to be understood. Wanting to be soft and feminine. I don’t know that part of me.

With so much talk about gender confusion in our world you would think femininity and masculinity would be clearly defined. And yet we live in a world where women are expected to take on all of these masculine traits. Where they are to take on roles that were never meant for them. And still somehow maintain the softness.

The same is true for men and masculinity but I won’t address that now.

I don't want to make enemies. I am not saying that women shouldn't work. I am not saying that women shouldn't contribute to the family and household. I am not suggesting that women are second class or weak. I am just saying that there is a difference between femininity and masculinity, intentionally a difference. God created us this way. There is beauty in it.

I am also not pointing fingers at anyone or anything so if that’s where your thoughts are going just don’t.

I want to discover the beauty and the feminine in my life. I don’t want to be expected to suppress it any longer. I want to celebrate this part of me. I want to get to know her. I want to share the gifts that are part of her make up. I want to embrace her softness and share the beauty of it with the world.

And I want other women to be able to do the same.
