About two weeks ago I received this beautiful book from a dear friend. It is titled “Women Holding Things”.
Each page is a simple statement or story and an illustration of women with some of the things women hold. It’s exquisite, and thought provoking and incredibly difficult at times.
One of the pages is “Woman Holding Up”
I speak to women every day that are women holding up, just holding up!
Women who are being wives and moms and bosses and workers and teachers and cooks and house cleaners and problem solvers and homework helpers and taxis and supporters and organizers and gardeners and bill payers and laundry keepers and grocery shoppers and meal planners and time keepers and listeners and encouragers and that’s in the course of a day. One day! Every day!
So we don’t need to wonder why they are women holding up.
God created women with such beauty and detail and capacity that we can do these things but his intent was not that we do them to the detriment of health and strength and sanity and the enjoyment of life.
Women nurture. In my recent inquiry it was the thing most mentioned by women as their greatest feminine quality and also mentioned by men as the most admired quality of the women they love.
To nurture is the process of caring for and encouraging the growth or development of someone or something.
We have to make room for what is most beautiful as it is also most needed. And all of the things mentioned above may be included in the process of nurturing but not all at once and all of the time.
We need each other. God saw and planned for relationship with him first and a spouse, as a member of a family and the body of Christ. Never alone just holding up.
Sometimes correction is needed. Based on the stories I see and hear from women just in my community sometimes is now. Let’s be deliberate, let’s ask the men in our lives for help, lets support each other in community and church and let’s do better than ”just holding up”!
”All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.“
