Warwick River Mennonite Church

Warwick River Mennonite Church We invite you to walk the journey of discipleship with us! This created familiar neighborhoods in the “Colony” and “Denbigh” districts of Newport News.

The people of Warwick River Mennonite Church have a rich history of hard work, love for music, close fellowship, and ministry to the social and spiritual needs of others. Just over one hundred years ago, Mennonite farm families from Ohio and Maryland moved down to Denbigh to establish a “colony” on the Peninsula. Through hard work and sound farming practices, they renewed the land and established

profitable farms and associated industries. Then, as the City of Newport News began to grow, many of them developed their land one plot at a time rather than sell their farms and move. With the earnings from such endeavors, these farmers-turned-contractors built a school
(WRCS), a retirement center (Mennowood), and a Christian camp (WCRC). They planted over six churches on the Peninsula and elsewhere. And always, at the heart of their life together, was the church they built and loved, Warwick River Mennonite Church.

Some of our history bueatifuly quitled.
It reads:
FOUNDING OF THE MENNONITE COLONY
In 1897, two Mennonite ministers, Isaac D Hertzler, of Maryland, D Z Yoder, of Ohio, purchased 1200 acres of the Denbigh Plantation from the Young family. These acres were divided into small farms as other Mennonites began moving in from many different states forming a colony on the banks of the Warwick River. This agrarian community of largely orchards, daries and truck farming found a ready market in the young city of Newport News twelve miles to the south.
