Today we celebrate the feast of St. Clare of Assisi (Aug 11). St. Clare, pray for us!

St. Clare of Assisi was born in the year 1193 in Assisi, Italy, into a noble and wealthy family. From her childhood, she was deeply devoted to God and often prayed and helped the poor. When she was about 18 years old, she heard St. Francis of Assisi preach during Lent, and his words touched her heart so much that she decided to give her whole life to Christ.

On the evening of Palm Sunday in 1212, Clare secretly left her home and went to the little chapel of the Portiuncula where St. Francis and his brothers received her. She gave up her rich clothes and put on a simple robe, cutting her hair as a sign of leaving her old life behind. At first, she stayed with some religious women, but soon she moved to the Church of San Damiano, where she started a new community of women following the same spirit of poverty and prayer as St. Francis. These women were later called the Poor Clares.

St. Clare lived a life of great simplicity, never owning anything personally or as a community, trusting completely in God’s care. She spent her days in prayer, fasting, and doing small acts of service with love. Clare was also very courageous—once, when soldiers tried to attack Assisi, she took the Blessed Sacrament and prayed before the enemy, and they went away without harming the town.

She remained the abbess of her community for many years, guiding the sisters with kindness and wisdom. Even when she was very sick in her later years, she continued to encourage everyone to trust God completely. She died on August 11, 1253, and two years later, Pope Alexander IV declared her a saint.

Today, St. Clare is remembered as a woman of deep faith, humility, and courage, and she is the patron saint of television, because once, when she was too ill to attend Mass, she miraculously saw and heard it on the wall of her room. Her life inspires people to choose God above all things and to live with a pure and trusting heart.
