"Being empathetic is not a flaw. Empathy is a gift that allows us to see ourselves in others and connect with the needs of others based on the good we desire for ourselves. While it is possible for empathy to be exploited, the nefarious actions of the few to manipulate and abuse the concerns for their needs should not be a deterrent to living the Golden Rule. Caring for others is a value that should not be shamed, nor should there be any shame experienced in being empathetic. This, too, is the Jesus way."

-Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia A. Thompson, General Minister & President/CEO, UCC

"Still we make rules and put some in and others out. Why do we do this when Jesus was so clear - the only rule is to love? Wouldn’t it be easier not to have rules? Well, yes, and no. Yes, if we really want to follow Jesus, if we’re willing to have all our human norms and ways of looking at the world and definitions of success thrown out with the rule books. No, if we want things to go on as they always have, with some on top, some on the bottom, some in, or some out. What was the reality show where the host would say, “You’re either in or you’re out”? And while that’s fine in a competition, do we really want life itself to be a competition? Do some have to be out so others may be in?"

"The story of Jesus' protest parade into Jerusalem speaks to us with more force this year as the current administration in Washington deprives people of their rights to free speech and due process, takes away support for the poor here and around the world, tries to deny trans people the right to exist, erase the stories of Black and Native people from our history, and moves us ever closer to the collapse of our climate. “What can we do?” we ask - sometimes in a tone that begs for action, sometimes in a tone of despair, sometimes in a tone of absolving ourselves of any responsibility. All those feelings and tones make sense. We too are human. But Jesus today offers us a different question - not “What can I do?” but “How can I walk on with love?”" - from Pamela Barz' Palm Sunday sermon "Hope Against Hope."

Hope Against Hope Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025 Sheepscott Community Church Reading: Luke 19: 28-40 Every year around this time we tell again the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The Gospel writers all tell it, but all a bit differently. Today we have Luke’s version of Jesus riding in...
