Preserving Newbury

Preserving Newbury We are a grass-roots group of volunteers committed to preservation, appreciation and respect for our history, the community and your ancestors.

In 2015, a project was taken on by Don Jarvis to address the issue of serious neglect and overgrowth at the First Parish Burying Ground in Newbury. Often working single-handedly or with a small number of recruited volunteers, the project was entirely self-funded but community outreach was needed as the project continued to grow. Through videos, newspaper articles and social media the project slowl

y came together, one by one hundreds upon hundreds of headstones were cleared of overgrowth and documented. Today, the grounds no longer looked neglected. Just over two years later, the Burying Ground is in the best condition that it has been in over 20 years. The project volunteers all agree with the First Parish Church that they are in a great position now to establish a Cemetery Committee and work towards maintaining and caring for the burying ground going forward. It has become clear that there are other areas in the town with similar needs to what was experienced at First Parish Burying Ground. We are all proud of the work we have done in the past and feel we are in a good position to now expand our efforts. We will continue to do what we do best - address unique community needs, provide documented research and cultivate preservation efforts. Effective January 2017, a group was formed called Preserving Newbury Coalition (Preserving Newbury). We feel we have sufficient resources and skills that can be utilized to care for, protect, and bring fresh life to Newbury. This will also include the Community Flag Disposal Box located in Byfield, MA, as we have a significant role in placing all of the flags on the veteran graves in town for Memorial Day. Our project at First Parish Burying Ground was financially supported by volunteers or through very small fundraising efforts. As a group, we understand the importance of fundraising and building support from the community. One of our main goals this year is developing a strong core of fundraising activities to support our efforts and strengthen our support from the community. Preserving Newbury Coalition will help build the Town records with regard to the Burying Grounds and Cemeteries, assist the Burying Grounds and Cemeteries in Newbury with preservation efforts, protect and care for historic landmarks (including American Flags), and preserve the history of the Town for future generations. We will be working in conjunction with various established community groups in these efforts. Together we can make a difference, together we are stronger. Together we will Preserve Newbury!

Every year for Memorial Day hundreds of flags are placed at all the Burying Grounds and Cemeteries within Newbury. The old grave marker flags are collected and disposed of at the Community Flag Disposal Box located at the Byfield Fire Department (44 Central St, Byfield, Mass).

This disposal box is a great way to respectfully dispose of any flag that is worn or torn. If you have a flag that needs to be retired please dispose of them respectfully. All the flags we collect are properly disposed of through a Flag Retirement Ceremony hosted by Boy Scouts of America. Have an old flag? Drop it off at the Community Flag Disposal Box, we are happy to retire it for you! 🇺🇸

We are honored to have the help and support of the Newbury Boy Scout Troop 44 this year with placing flags for Memorial Day in Newbury. They will assist with the placing all the flags for Memorial Day and we will discuss about a possible flag retirement ceremony that will follow in the future. With grateful hearts, we thank the Scouts!! 🇺🇸

Wreath update and call for volunteers!

I was hoping to have definitive details at this point but all we know at the moment is that a truck is being loaded with 54 boxes of wreaths. We do not know when they will arrive in Newbury.

That being said we need some very specific help in the coming days, if you can assist please write to me at: [email protected] - please only use this address as the volunteers read and coordinate from this mailbox - we cannot respond via text or Facebook messenger.

Let us know which volunteer job number(s) you can help out with.

#1. Meet/Unload the wreath truck - Newbury - date and time is not known, and we don’t get a lot of notice. Volunteers should be in the area and be able to get a text and go over to help in a very short time. Volunteers needed 3-4, please provide cell phone number and email.

#2. Wreath distribution - Newbury and Byfield, Noon on Friday December 14th. Wreaths need to be divided up and delivered to each of the five cemeteries. We have one box truck, other vehicles to transport are welcomed. 3-4 volunteers, up to four trucks/trailers, , please provide cell phone number and email.

#3. Cemetery leader - December 15th - Noon to approx. 2pm - Needed for South Byfield Cemetery and Evergreen/Old Town on Cottage Road. The leader will assist volunteers with questions and ensure grave specific wreaths are placed. 2 volunteers needed. Please provide Email.

#4. Wreath placement, all cemeteries - December 15th - Noon to approx. 2pm - we do not have a location this year to host the ceremony so the process will be different than in years past. If you want to place wreaths please contact us and as soon as the meeting location is secure you will be given the details of the location via email. If you want to work in a specific cemetery let us know in the email. If you have already contact us then you will get an email soon. Please provide Email.

#5- Wreath clean up - January 12th 2019 - Pick up the wreaths and bring them to the town bonfire. Details will be provided in January, please provide email.
