Sunday Sermon Summary, November 16, 2025:
Psalm 46: 1-11 NIV, 1984 Edition
Facing life with God’s help. Psalm 46 may be the Psalm that has a divine power to give us comfort, especially in difficult times. We are going to read it and them talk about it in sections.
Have you ever felt like running away? Anxiety and stress that seem to overtake us. Times when we just need to grow up and face things, but we are struggling. There isn’t a formula for spiritual maturity. Growth and maturity comes with experience. When we learn of a friend who is diagnosed with a terminal illness, or a doctor tells us our tests is questionable, or our children grow up and leave home, or selling a house, changing jobs, retirement, all of these things produce life changing affects. Humanly speaking we can’t handle lots of quick changes. But, God.
Let’s look at Psalm 46: 1, the Hebrew word for trouble is “pressed down” remember between a rock and a hard place. That is the kind of pressure this writer is talking about. When we are in that place, turn to this Psalm. Regardless of what happens in this world, there is still strength and power in the word of God, no matter what we are facing.
The first 3 verses of this Psalm deal with the changes in nature “I will not fear”, verses 4-7 deals with changes in society, “I will not be moved”. Verses 8-11 deals with us personally “I will not let stress ruin my life”. “I will live in accord with his will, regardless of what is going on around me”.
As Christians, we know that the Lord is in command, despite of all the things we see going on in this world. Vs. 4-7, Here he pictures nations in an uproar, kingdoms falling, great change taking place. Sounds like our world today. We see great change in our world. Mankind falling apart, but we as Christians don’t have to be, we can stand steady because God is our refuge and our strength. Because Jesus is king of kings, he is the same yesterday, today and forever. We can stand strong in the faith and commitment we have in our Lord.
I will not be filled with Stress: The Psalmist looks at all the changes that takes place. Look at vs. 8-11,
I will not be moved: In the midst of it all, I will no longer let my life be filled with stress, why? Because God is my refuge and my strength. He is our fortress. I wonder if we have forgotten to relax, how long has it been since we did simple things? Do we talk about our day, enjoy one another? How long has it been since you took a long walk? Watched the sun set? How long has it been since you relaxed? Take your watch off and don’t worry about what time it is. Three words can summarize how we spend our life, hurry, worry, and scurry. “Be still and know that he is God”.
God is always near and available to us. He never puts us on hold. We may be on hold on the phone, at the red light, or in line at the supermarket. But God is always available and anxious to hear from us. The creator of this world, actually will listen to us. he is interested in us. Some of our problems may be superficial, maybe next week they won’t make a difference. But others are deeper and God will help us. Learn his word and learn from him.
God’s power is greater than anything else in this world. Greater than the winds, storms, volcanoes, all the things in society. His power is enough to win all our battles. God is our refuge and our strength, ever present help in trouble.
God’s help works even when we can’t help ourselves. Have you ever felt weak, there is to much stress, I can’t handle this? To many life changing events, and we are ready to explode. God’s help is available and all we have to do is reach out and grab hold of it. God is our refuge and our strength.
