--------------------
Blessed is the Greek word “makarios”
Makarios is not weak and momentary bliss, but deep-rooted joy in our identity in Christ. This is more about belonging and existence inside the goodness of God’s kingdom.
Poor in spirit is the front door to the kingdom
Being poor in spirit is not a performance.
It is about constant recognition of our deep need of God. In John 15, Jesus says, apart from me you can do nothing. The rest of the Sermon Mount requires this understanding.
The bar is set high on purpose.
It is easy to read the Sermon on the Mount and feel completely inadequate. The bar is set high not to crush you, but to drive you towards God’s grace and strength. This is poor in spirit.
Poor in spirit is not about paying God back.
Grace is not a loan. We don’t give God our lives as a transaction for his grace, but out of gratefulness, honor, and worship. If we think transactionally, grace becomes cheap and not a gift from God.
You never graduate being poor in spirit.
Being poor in spirit isn’t training wheels to get us started. It is the mentality we carry with us every day. Our prayers, lifestyle, and actions must be regularly saturated with “God, I need you!”
