🏆 2026 Tikkun Olam Awards Honorees 🏆

Each year, as part of our Annual Gala, we honor those in our community who exemplify the ideas of Tikkun Olam (“repair the world”) and Tzedakah (“social justice”) - right here in our backyard. This year, we’re excited to honor three individuals AND three groups doing just that.

When Eliyahu Collins started his internship at Congregation Ahavas Sholom in the spring of 2022, the rabbinical student was nervous about how the congregants would receive him.

We had such an incredible time at the 2025 Tikkun Olam Awards. It was exciting to honor these diverse individuals who have made so many varied contributions to our community through their leadership and service. All of our honorees have recognized their power to make change and then taken steps to repair our corner of the world, each in their own way. Our Congregation is pleased to announce the 2025 Congregation Ahavas Sholom Tikkun Olam Awardees. These individuals embody the concept of Tikkun Olam: the idea that each of us has a responsibility to actively work towards the repair of our world.

We honor this group of unique individuals who all contribute to a more perfect world. Louise Scott-Rountree, Isabel Adler, Celia M. King, Paul Tractenberg, Warren Grover, Dr. Marion A Bolden, Adam Saravay, Craig Drinkard, and Elizabeth Del Tufo.

Last week, we had a great time at our Annual Hanukkah Party! We brought gifts to give to children in the Newark community. Then we did children's Hanukkah crafts, ate latkes, donuts, pizza, falafel, ice cream, and fruit salad. Then we lit our Hanukkah Menorahs together and made new Hanukkah memories with our community!

Congregation Ahavas Sholom mourns the passing of the Honorable Mildred C. Crump.

Councilwoman Crump was a special friend to our Congregation President Eric Freedman and a friend to our congregation and Newark.

In March of this year, she was a recipient of our first ever Tikkun Olam Awards. Tikkun Olam translates loosely to the 'repair of the world' and draws from the idea in Jewish theology that human beings are responsible for completing G-d’s creation.

Councilwoman Crump made immense contributions towards in*******al and interfaith understanding by co-founding the Diversity United series and leading ‘courageous conversations’ with members of our congregation and larger community. In addition her many other civic commitments, she made the entire city of Newark a better place through her strong voice on the Newark Municipal Council for decades.

We feel thankful for her presence in our lives and grateful we were able to share our deep appreciation this year. May her memory be a blessing.
