Even Paul carried an unanswered prayer. Whatever his “thorn in the flesh” was, God chose not to remove it. Instead, He reminded Paul that grace is sometimes found not in escaping hardship, but in being sustained through it. God’s power is often revealed most clearly in our weakness.

Before Paul became the apostle who carried the gospel across the Roman world, he stood approving the stoning of Stephen. Yet grace still found him. Paul’s story reminds us that God does not call perfect people. He transforms broken ones and redeems even the parts of our story we thought could never be restored.

Before Philip became known for preaching and evangelism, he served food to widows in the early Church. His story reminds us that the Kingdom of God is often built through quiet faithfulness long before anyone notices. Not every ministry is visible, but every act of service matters when it is offered to Christ.

The story of Pentecost in Acts 2 is deeply connected to the Tower of Babel in Genesis. At Babel, pride and sin divided humanity and scattered people across the earth through confused languages. But at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit begins gathering people back together through Christ as the Gospel is heard in every language. God was not erasing differences. He was restoring humanity and undoing the distance that sin created.

When Philip approached the Ethiopian eu**ch, he did not begin with a sermon or debate. He simply asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” That moment reveals the humility at the heart of real ministry. Spiritual growth often begins not with trying to impress others, but with honest questions, humble listening, and walking alongside people with grace as the Holy Spirit slowly draws them toward Christ.

When the Holy Spirit prompted Philip to go toward the desert road and approach the Ethiopian eu**ch’s chariot, Acts says he ran. That small detail reveals a heart that had learned to trust and respond quickly to God’s leading. Pentecost was not only about receiving power. It was about becoming attentive and obedient to the movement of the Holy Spirit in everyday life.

Devotion for the Week: From Persecutor to Proclaimer

Acts 9:15 – “Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.” (NLT)

Before he became Paul the apostle, Saul was feared by the early church. He hunted Christians, approved of violence against them, and genuinely believed he was protecting the faith of Israel by stopping the spread of the message about Jesus. If anyone in the first century seemed too far gone to ever become a follower of Christ, it would have been Saul. Yet the story of Acts 9 reminds us that God has never been limited by a person’s past, their failures, or even their resistance.

On the road to Damascus, Saul encountered the risen Christ, and in a single moment the direction of his life began to change. The man who once tried to silence the Gospel would eventually spend the rest of his life proclaiming it. The one who once inspired fear in believers would become one of the church’s greatest missionaries, carrying the message of Jesus across cities, cultures, and nations that had never heard the good news before.

We should also pause and think about how this isn't only about the dramatic nature of Saul’s conversion, but the reminder that God often sees something in people long before anyone else can. Where others saw an enemy, God saw a servant. Where others saw destruction, God saw future ministry. That's an example from God Himself for us to remember, because while we are often tempted to believe that some people could never truly change, the Holy Spirit has always specialized in transforming unlikely lives.

This week, ask yourself:
- Is there an area of my life where God may be trying to redirect me?
- Have I quietly assumed that someone is beyond the reach of grace?
- Am I willing to let the Holy Spirit transform not only what I do, but who I am becoming?

The same God who transformed Saul into Paul is still changing lives today, often in ways we never would have expected.

Pentecost was already a holy festival long before the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2. During the Feast of Weeks, pilgrims gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate God giving the Law at Mount Sinai. That deeper context reveals something beautiful: at Sinai God wrote His law on stone tablets, but at Pentecost He began writing His presence on human hearts. Acts 2 was not random. It was part of God’s plan of restoration and promise all along.

At Pentecost, the tongues of fire did not remain above the room or rest only on the apostles. They rested on ordinary people. That small detail reveals something powerful: through Christ and the Holy Spirit, God’s presence is no longer confined to a building or sacred place. God draws near personally to people with fears, questions, flaws, and everyday lives just like ours.

Pentecost was never only about wind, fire, and dramatic moments. Through Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian eu**ch, we see something deeper: the Holy Spirit drawing near to people personally. God sees the searching heart, the quiet questions, and the people wondering if they truly belong. The Gospel moves outward one person at a time.
