Please join me in praying for the people of Nepal following the devastating floods that have claimed so many lives and left hundreds missing. I echo the Holy Father in commending the souls of those who have died to the mercy of God and offering my heartfelt condolences to their families.

Pope Leo reminds us that our identity and our worth does not come from our ability or our achievements, not from our success or failures. Our identity doesn't come from our worth, wealth or status. We are solely "A gift from God." We are first human beings, not human doings.

"I can see clearly now!"
Today I celebrated my first public Mass in 5 weeks after surgery for a detached retina.
I want to thank all of you for keeping me in your prayers. I now have about 70% of my vision back. As in today's Gospel, I knew that because of the Lord, the storm I was in would not have the final word. As I begin to see again through this eye, I am deeply grateful. We all know that every day isn't easy. We all have moments when we find ourselves in the storm. But Jesus is always in the storm with us.
When you experience life's storms, I invite you to say a simple prayer.
'Lord, help me trust. Help me trust You in my storm'
No storm lasts forever, and because of Jesus, the storm never has the final word. With faith and hope, we can always say; It's going to be a bright, sunshiny day!

Una de las cosas más hermosas de Dios es su sentido del humor. Cuando era Obispo de Joliet, esperaba poder llevar a las Hermanas de la Vida a la diócesis, pero no fue posible. En cambio, el Señor quiso traerme a mí hasta ellas aquí, en la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York.

Fue una gran alegría celebrar la profesión de votos perpetuos de la Hermana Eden Marie, S.V., la Hermana Elena Marie, S.V., y la Hermana Maria Annunciata, S.V. Les pido que las mantengan en sus oraciones, así como yo las tendré presentes en las mías.

One of the beautiful things about God is His sense of humor. When I was Bishop of Joliet, I hoped to bring the Sisters of Life to the diocese, but to no avail. Instead, the Lord saw fit to bring me to them here in the Archdiocese of New York.

Today it was a joy to celebrate the profession of final vows of Sister Eden Marie, S.V., Sister Elena Marie, S.V., and Sister Maria Annunciata, S.V. Please keep them in your prayers, as I will keep them in mine.

It was a great joy to celebrate the Perpetual Profession of Vows of Sister Eden Marie, S.V., Sister Elena Marie, S.V., and Sister Maria Annunciata, S.V., with the Sisters of Life on the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Join me in praying for them as they begin this new chapter of their vocation.

Aquí les traigo una breve actualización sobre mi ojo. Durante este tiempo de recuperación he seguido trabajando, pero espero poder regresar a la Misa pública y al ministerio el 5 de agosto, algo que he extrañado muchísimo. ¡Extraño verlos a todos! Por favor, sigan enviando sus oraciones y sepan que yo estoy rezando por todos ustedes.

I’m here with a quick update on my eye. During this time of recuperation, I’ve been keeping up on work, but hopefully on August 5th I’ll be able to return to public Mass and ministry, which I miss desperately. I miss seeing all of you! Please keep those prayers coming and know that I am praying for all of you.

We all share something in common. The thing we have in common is that we all have our own burdens.
Jesus says to us, “Come to me, all of you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” He is not talking about a rest that is vacation or a perfect life. What Jesus is offering is an eternal and internal peace. A true peace.

Jesus tells us we are here to remember. To celebrate. He is the bread who came down from heaven, and whoever eats this bread will live forever.
