There are times when our inspiration quietly fades, and we wonder whether we simply need to try harder.
Yet throughout history, the Buddhist masters who came before us also understood the importance of conditions. At times, the mind needs ๐ ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ฉ๐.
๐ฟ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ has remained quietly hidden from the world, but never from those seeking awakening.
For centuries, this hidden gem drew generations of great yogis and realized masters across the Himalayas.
And in the Vajrayana tradition, Garsha is revered as
Its valleys and mountains are woven into a sacred geography where generations of practitioners sought the ideal conditions for meditation, retreat, and realization.
Among them were the Indian great master Nagarjuna, the Mahasiddha
Ghantapa (Drilbupa, about 1200 years ago), the heroic Himalayan yogis Gyalwa Gotsangpa and Drubthop Orgyenpa (800 years ago), the Dragon
siddhas Taktsang Repa and Rangrik Repa (400 years ago), and many others.
๐ฟ One of Garsha's most sacred sites is Drilbu Ri. Within the tradition, it forms part of ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฅ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ค๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ฆ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐โthe same spiritual geography that includes Mount Kailash.
Nearly 800 years ago, Gyalwa Gotsangpa described Drilbu Ri as ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ค๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ, while its peak appeared to him as the self-arisen stupa called โthe Essence of the Dharma.โ
Jigten Gonpo later praised the mountain as equal in significance to Bodhgaya, encouraging practitioners to seek its blessings of purification and awakening.
๐ฟ It is this living spiritual heritage that has led generations of Drukpa Masters to encourage pilgrimage to Garsha as an essential support for practice.
In our tradition, pilgrimage is not simply about visiting a sacred place. It is about ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ซ๐จ๐ค๐๐ง ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐๐ฆ ๐จ๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ carried through the centuries, allowing us to reconnect with the lineage and discover the same potential for awakening within ourselves.
This September, the ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐จ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ซ๐ offers us the precious opportunity to walk this sacred landscape under the guidance of ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฅ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐จ๐ค๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐โnot simply to follow in the footsteps of the great masters, but to cultivate the same aspiration and allow the journey itself to become part of our own practice.
We sincerely hope to meet many of you in Garsha and share this meaningful journey together.
