The third of our core values is on the nature of the Trinity. Who is the Trinity? What does it mean to be comforted by mystery? And how does an understanding of the Trinity help us understand ourselves?

Join us for our new series: The Prophetic Imagination.

The Biblical tradition of the prophet may at first glance illicit images of wild, bearded individuals shouting messages of doom from the wilderness. And yet, when we look more closely at what the prophetic tradition actually entails it becomes clear that...

- The prophetic voice speaks from a place of endless imagination and creativity.
- The prophetic voice stands in sharp contrast to the prevailing consciousness of the dominant community.
- The prophetic voice speaks into the present moment with a contemporary fluency that ultimately points to a new freedom and a new future.

So, how might we as a church work to foster true creativity, develop robust imaginations and deliberately hone our prophetic voice? Continuing our current series titled The Prophetic Imagination, Chris Lawrence recently spoke on the active practice of hope saying, “Hope isn’t afraid to look into the darkness. Jesus, in his storytelling, insists hope is an active work to be done through the night, keeping our lamps fueled even if the wait seems interminably long. Hope is an act of waiting, waiting for the moment that all that has been beautiful, each action that has contained love will be preserved and brought forward into a newly mended world.“

Last Sunday we contrasted the imperial imagination with the prophetic imagination. The imperial imagination tells us that this is the way things are, this is the way things have always been and this is the way things are always going to be. On the other hand, the prophetic imagination can see through the way the now is being presented, it knows things are not the way they seem, moreover the prophetic imagination has access to deep memories so it can remember a different past. And because of that, the prophetic imagination can envisage and hope for an entirely different future. But in order for the prophetic imagination to be able to do all this, the imagination has to be free and the prophetic imagination finds its freedom in relationship with the God who is completely free. But a god, who is ‘coincidentally’ aligned with all our major institutions and the views of the surrounding predominant culture is probably not a free god but the servant and slave of the established order.

Last week, we spent some time outlining the territory in and around our new series titled, The Prophetic Imagination, exploring themes like prophecy, apocalyptic tone and prophetic voice. And, over the next nine weeks, we’ll be diving into how all of this has functioned Biblically and might still function today in our current cultural context.
