From the screen to the streets. 🤍

After our recent viewing of Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story, members of our Ascension community continued reflecting on Dorothy Day’s life through a walking tour of places connected to her faith, work, and witness in New York.

The afternoon gave us a chance to listen, walk together, and remember how Dorothy Day lived the Gospel through hospitality, solidarity, and care for the poor and the worker.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to those who helped guide our community through this meaningful part of Catholic and New York history. 🙏

“Coming back here is just being with my people, being with my family.” 🥰

For Romari Casilla, Ascension has been home since the very beginning.

She has been part of the parish for nineteen years, growing up with Sunday Mass, family, and a community that continues to welcome her back.

Even as university life takes her to different places, Ascension remains a place of return. For Romari, coming back means being with her people, being with her family, and continuing to contribute to a church that has shaped her life.

Thank you, Romari, for sharing your Ascension story with us. 🙏

“The Eucharist is at the heart of what unites us.”

In his homily for Corpus Christi, Deacon Nelson reflected on the Church as the Body of Christ: one body with many parts, many gifts, and many stories.

Some pray. Some plan. Some serve. Some cook. Some clean. Some welcome. Each person does something different, yet all are joined together in Christ’s mystical body.

He also recalled a recent moment of fellowship when members of Ascension shared our parish feast day with the Church of the Ascension in Minneapolis. As both communities worshiped together, listened to one another’s stories, and hoped together, we were reminded that the Body of Christ reaches across distance, culture, race, and gender.

This is the beauty of the Church: we are connected by Christ’s love, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, and God’s presence in each one of us.

“We’re all a part of Christ’s mystical body.”
“Todos somos parte del cuerpo místico de Cristo.”

“We are very blessed with wonderful music.” 🩵🎼

As our choir season comes to a close until October, we give thanks for the music that has carried our prayers through Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and every Sunday in between.

We are especially grateful to our wonderful choir and to Preston Smith for sharing their time, talent, and devotion with our parish community. Their music continues to enrich our Eucharistic celebrations and lift our hearts in prayer.

Thank you for filling Ascension with beauty, reverence, and joy. We look forward to hearing you again in October. 🎶

“Estamos muy bendecidos con música maravillosa.”

“El Señor me agarró y no me quiere soltar.”

“The Lord took hold of me and does not want to let me go.”

Herminda Moronta’s Ascension story began when she was still very young.

Her sister, who lived nearby, would bring her to Ascension whenever Herminda came to visit. Through those visits, this church became part of her memory, her faith, and her life. Though her sister has since passed away, Herminda says she left her the legacy of this church.

Today, even though Herminda lives elsewhere and belongs to another parish, Ascension remains home.

Here, she says, she encountered Jesus. Here, she made her Emmaus retreat. Here, through Father Daniel Kearney, the deacons, and the many parish groups, she has felt the warmth of a community that holds, cares, and comforts.

“Y me siento feliz aquí en la Ascensión.”

“And I feel happy here at Ascension.”

Thank you, Herminda, for sharing your Ascension story with us. đź’–

“I really feel like I come here to be fed, emotionally and spiritually.”

For more than fifteen years, Jo Flattery and her family have called Ascension home.

Her children grew up here, attending Sunday school with Robin, joining parish plays and celebrations, and receiving their First Holy Communion and Confirmation at Ascension.

Through the years, our church has remained a place of formation. For Jo, Ascension continues to offer a faith rooted in compassion and spiritual nourishment.

Thank you, Jo, for sharing your Ascension story with us.

And since we are excited to share more… 💖

Here is another clip from last Sunday’s choir concert, this time with Hail Holy Queen from Sister Act.
