What happens when our attention becomes a commodity? 🤔

In this clip from our March "Evenings of Hope" presentation, Ascension parishioner and Princeton historian Dr. D. Graham Burnett reflects on how the attention economy affects our ability to care, connect, and engage with the world around us.

On Thursday, November 12, at 7:30 PM, Dr. Burnett will lead another "Evenings of Hope" presentation titled “Pope Leo XIV: ‘Magnificent Humanity’,” exploring the importance of safeguarding the human person in the age of artificial intelligence.

“And that’s what we call justice.”

In his homily for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time on October 18, Fr. Kearney reflects on Jesus’ words: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”

Beyond the question of taxes, Fr. Kearney reminds us that justice means giving each person their due. His reflection invites us to consider our responsibilities to God and to one another.

❤️ An evening with our parish volunteers

Each year, Fr. Kearney organizes a gathering to recognize and thank the volunteers who generously share their time and talents with the Church of the Ascension.

This year’s gathering brought members of our parish community together for an evening of fellowship, conversation, and appreciation.

To all our volunteers, thank you for your continued dedication and for the many ways you contribute to parish life!

Coming Up at Ascension This November!

We have several events to look forward to this November at the Church of the Ascension. From music and conversation to our choir's visit to Washington, DC, here are three upcoming events to mark on your calendar.

🎹 Sunday, November 8, 3:00 PM
Three Sundays at 3: Preston Smith, Piano and Friends
Join us for an afternoon of music featuring works by Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel. A ch*****ne reception will follow in the Rectory Dining Room.

Thursday, November 12, 7:30 PM
Evenings of Hope Lecture Series
D. Graham Burnett, PhD, will present a lecture titled “Pope Leo XIV: ‘Magnificent Humanity’ on Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.” The lecture follows the 7:00 PM Mass.

Saturday–Sunday, November 14–15
Ascension Choir Travels to Washington, DC
Our choir has been invited to sing at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday, November 14, at the 4:30 PM Vigil Mass, and at Christ Church in Alexandria on Sunday, November 15, at the 10:00 AM service. Admission is free to the concerts at Ascension. We also welcome your prayers and support for our choir as they prepare for their visit to Washington, DC.

"May we never become indifferent to violence or suffering.”

In this week’s Pastor’s Column, Fr. Daniel Kearney reflects on the dignity of human life in light of the planned ex*****on of Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.

Acknowledging the suffering of the victims and their families, Fr. Kearney raises important questions about justice, mercy, and the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of human life.

Drawing on Pope Francis’s teaching on the death penalty and Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s consistent ethic of life, he reminds us that our commitment to human dignity must extend even to those whose actions we condemn.

“Our faith demands more than outrage at a particular decision. It demands a consistent commitment to life.”
