2 Corinthians 6:1–10
Brethren: Working together with Christ, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, “In a favourable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favourable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labours, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honour and dishonour, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.
Psalm 98:1, 2–3ab, 3cd–4
Response: The Lord has made known his salvation.
O sing a new song to the Lord, for he has worked wonders. His right hand & his holy arm have brought salvation.
Response: The Lord has made known his salvation.
The Lord has made known his salvation, has shown his deliverance to the nations. He has remembered his merciful love and his truth for the house of Israel.
Response: The Lord has made known his salvation.
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song, and sing out your praise.
Response: The Lord has made known his salvation.
Acclamation: Your word is a lamp for my feet, and a light for my path.
Gospel: Matthew 5:38–42
At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.
Reflection: “Do not resist the one who is evil,” is a piece of advice from Jesus that sounds unrealistic. The natural tendency in anyone is to resist, take revenge, retaliate or finish off the offender. Among the warring nations, they practise it by retaliating a hundredfold for every offence by the opponent. However, Jesus showed by his own life, sufferings and death, that it is possible and even imperative to ‘turn the other cheek’ if we are to be children of our heavenly Father. Saint Paul describes how he endured great afflictions, hardships, calamities, imprisonment, etc., with the weapon of righteousness. The natural reaction of a follower of Christ should be to give and forgive, for these are the characteristics of our heavenly Father. What is my reaction towards those who oppose or offend me?
