On Friday, July 31st, Archpriest Fr. Mesrob and Yn. Ojeen Lakissian attended an Armenian Night at St. Vartanantz Church in Ridgefield, New Jersey, together with a group of St. Illuminator's parishioners. The event was co-sponsored and organized by the Hamazkayin of New Jersey, in collaboration with Sts. Vartanantz. Not even rainy weather could keep parishioners, friends, and members of the Sts. Vartanantz community from enjoying lively music, dancing, and delicious food, and embracing the vibrant atmosphere of a festive evening of traditional Armenian culture.

A Lovely Gesture of Thanks from the Jinishian Memorial Association

For two years, St. Illuminator's has been proud to support the work of the Jinishian Memorial Association, which has operated in Lebanon, Armenia, and Syria for 60 years, providing essential services to needy Armenian individuals and families. Its programs focus on families who experience food insecurity, the elderly who do not have support, people who have insufficient access to health services or cannot afford medications due to skyrocketing costs, and teenager girls who have dropped out of school.

In 2024, St. Illuminator's had the pleasure of receiving a visit from Christine Tanielian-Sarkissian, JMA's country director for Lebanon, who gave a presentation at the Cathedral about JMA's work. Later the same year, Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Lalisaian paid a visit to JMA's headquarters in Bourj Hammoud. On both occasions, Mayr Yegeghetsi and her parishioners generously donated to JMA.

This week, we received the special letter of thanks from Christine, along with the lovely gift, which she sent as a token of appreciation.

On Sunday, July 19th, after Soorp Badarak, St. Illuminator's hosted a watch party for the final game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, organized by the Cathedral's young adults. The event was attended by 50 parishioners and friends who met in fellowship as football fans to cheer for their preferred team, more-or-less evenly divided between supporters of Argentina and Spain (with the balance perhaps in Lionel Messi's favor). They were led by Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Lakissian, joined by Rev. Fr. Bedros Kadehjian.

Experiencing the tension and electricity of a historic World Cup final in which there was no score until near the end of overtime, attendees calmed their nerves and found sustenance before and during the big game by nibbling on pizza and wings, and sipping beer, wine, and cocktails, served up by the hosts. In the end, two lucky attendees each went home with an official replica game ball, one from the group and early knockout stages and one from the finals, which were raffled off at half time and again at the conclusion of the game. The rest of the attendees walked away having spent a truly memorable afternoon at the Cathedral.

The World Cup watch party, a first at St. Illuminator's, marked another special occasion for the Cathedral to celebrate the ennobling and uniting power of sports this year, joining our first-of-their-kind watch parties for the Superbowl and Games 3 and 5 of the New York Knicks' historic victory in the NBA Finals. and of course, our perennial support of the Homenetmen Games and AYF Olympics, taking place this year in the New York metro area.

Three cheers for the beauty and spirit of sports!
