On Tuesday, June 9th, Mr. & Mrs. Vartkes and Mayda Derkalousdian and Mr. & Mrs. Nishan and Arousiag Derkalousdian paid a call at St. Illuminator's Cathedral. The Derkalousdian brothers and their spouses are fellow villagers from Anjar who settled in Fresno and have been dedicated and active members of the Armenian community there for 50 years. The Derkalousdians had come on a special visit to express their kindest good wishes to Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Lakissian and the St. Illuminator's Family. Der Hayr gave them a tour of the Cathedral and her historical significance.

On Monday, June 8th the AYF Manhattan “Moush” chapter hosted a watch party for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, featuring the New York Knicks.

More than 60 Armenians from the New York metro area, including members of other local AYF chapters, gathered at the Cathedral to cheer for the home team in a Pashalian Hall decked out in orange and blue. They were led by Knicks superfan-in-chief Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Lakissian, joined by Rev. Fr. Bedros Kadehjian.

As attendees could not be fueled by enthusiasm alone, they nibbled on Finals-appropriate pizza, wings, and cocktails, served up by the hosts. The event was organized by the Manhattan "Moush" chapter executive, led by chair Garen Torossian, joined by Alique Karakachian, and Cathedral's Adam Pidedjian and Aram Parnagian.

While the Knicks fell short on Monday, the energy in the hall throughout the night was electric. That electricity got such a boost on Wednesday night from the Knicks' historic win in Game 4 that the “Moush” chapter decided to hold another watch party for Game 5 on Saturday, June 13th, with Der Mesrob's blessing! See the flyer below for details.

Go New York, go New York, go! Go Knicks in Five!

In December 2025, Archdeacon Shant Kazanjian, Director of Christian Education of the Eastern Prelacy and Archdeacon of St. Illuminator's Cathedral, in collaboration with the Cathedral, launched a program titled “Hearing & Reading Scripture Together.” The program, which began as a pilot, is now established as an important feature of St. Illuminator's religious education ministry.

The Church regards the Bible as an essential and indispensable foundation of Christian faith and life, as taught by Jesus and his apostles and attested by the Holy Fathers of the Church. Yet the Bible is a large and, for many, a daunting book. As a result, many do not engage with it regularly and often benefit from guidance and support in reading Scripture. Hearing and Reading Scripture Together seeks to bridge that gap and foster biblical literacy among the faithful by offering a forum for disciplined, continuous Bible reading, accompanied by brief commentary and prayer, in daily sessions lasting under 20 minutes, Monday through Friday, from 12:30 to 12:50 PM.

On Friday, June 5th, the group completed the fifth book of the Bible, Deuteronomy. The Daily Reading Program will resume on Monday, June 8th, with the Book of Joshua.

The program is open to all, and the faithful are encouraged to participate. Please click https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/IxDLxOPkT62ULUeRXwzsyg #/registration to register.

On Sunday, May 31st, St. Illuminator’s Sunday and Armenian Schools celebrated the end of the 2025-2026 school year with their annual Hantes, featuring a special program and graduation ceremony, held in Pashalian Hall. The event brought together pupils, their parents, their teachers, Mrs. Louise Kanian, Mrs. Maria Ebrimian, and Mrs. Rita Tomassian, special guest Mrs. Hera Makhoulian, Director of the Armenian National Educational Committee of the Eastern Prelacy, and Cathedral parishioners.

Graduating on Sunday were Megerdich Azizyan, Anoush Azizyan, and Tatev Manoukian, the first to do so since the Pandemic interrupted the operation of the Sunday and Armenian Schools.

The program began with a recitation by the children of the Hayr Mer. In her welcoming remarks, Mrs. Ebrimian, Director of the Armenian School, greeted attendees and expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Lakissian, the Board of Trustees, Mrs. Makhoulian, and the parents for their continued support of the Armenian School, along with special thanks to donors the Ara Ghazarian Fund, the Armenian Relief Society's (ARS) Erebouni Chapter, and Mrs. Sandra Vartanian-Khuzkian, for their financial support.

Mrs. Ebrimian proudly announced that two St. Illuminator's pupils, Tatev Manoukian and Ara Garnig Megerdichian, who participated in the ARS’s essay competition by submitting videos on behalf of the School, had won special prizes, which Mrs. Ebrimian presented to them on behalf of the ARS.

Mrs. Makhoulian also spoke, expressing her appreciation for St. Illuminator's Schools, their pupils, and parents and encouraged the graduates to continue to maintain and defend their Armenian identity.

Mrs. Kanian, a Cathedral Trustee and Director of the Sunday School, shared emotional words of encouragement and congratulations for all the students and expressed her appreciation to Archdeacon Shant Kazanjian, Archdeacon of the Cathedral and Director of Christian Education at the Eastern Prelacy, as well as to the parents and supporters of the schools.

Der Mesrob conveyed his gratitude on behalf of the St. Illuminator's Family to Mrs. Kanian, Mrs. Ebrimian, and Mrs. Tomassian for their selfless volunteer service. He also expressed special appreciation to the parents who dutifully bring their children every Sunday to receive an Armenian Christian education. Der Mesrob commended the invaluable work accomplished by this small but important program and encouraged everyone to continue supporting the formation of Armenian Christian identity in the rising generations of our community through the transmission of Armenian Christian, cultural, and national values to our children.

All the speakers encouraged attendees to work together to increase student enrollment in the coming years.

The program continued with a series of recitations by pupils of selections of Armenian poetry and prose on Christian and cultural themes, followed by the graduation ceremony, during which the three graduates received certificates from both the Sunday and Armenian Schools for completing their eight-year course of study. At the conclusion, the teachers presented their pupils with special gifts and Der Mesrob and Yn. Ojeen presented special gifts to the teachers, in recognition of their dedication and service.
