Shield of David Girl's Orphanage Alumni, Bronx, New York

Shield of David Girl's Orphanage Alumni, Bronx, New York Shield of David was a girl's orphanage located at 718 Bryant Avenue in the Bronx. It was probably opened in the early 1930's. I was there from 1941 - 1945. TABLE

I am hoping to connect with other women that lived here. The SHIELD OF DAVID HOME FOR ORPHAN GIRLS first opened as a school and services for re****ed Jewish Children. In 1933, it operated as a resident home for 65 orphaned and dependent girls. From 1935 through 1946 it was located at 718 Bryant Avenue and later moved to Andrews Avenue. There were two affiliated organizations, known as the Mother's

Organization and the Men's Organization that engaged in fund raising activities. Rose and Ellis P. Levy were benefactors of the Shield. The director's name from the late 1920's to at least 1937 was Isadore Rees. Last known address in 1977 was The Shield Institute, 1800 Andrews Ave., Bronx, NY 10453.

Mrs. Sterling was the night nurse and Rose Latzen was the day nurse. Mrs. Jacknow also worked here. Dr. Shostak was the director of the home when I was there. Prior to Dr. Shostak, Dr. Reese was in charge. The Hebrew teacher was Leah Rosen and the gardener was Louis. Do any of these names sound familiar? I am desperately looking to connect with other women who lived here! Any information will be most helpful.
