At the annual Annuitant Visitor Gathering in Kansas City, Missouri, Elyse Berry, Associate for Advocacy and Leadership Development at the Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM), led a workshop on self-care and boundary setting for Annuitant Visitors.

“Self-care is so important [for clergy] because we have to be able to replenish ourselves,” Berry said. “There are a lot of elders here, and no matter how old you are, we’re all trying to live into a mature faith experience. That involves asking yourself, ‘What do I need?’ and we’re the only ones who actually have access to that inner knowledge.”

On the second day of the Annuitant Visitor Gathering, the Rev. Ben Keckler, Annuitant Visitor Dean, and the Rev. Tom Zoelzer, Annuitant Visitor, led an engaging workshop on how Annuitant Visitors can balance a growing visitation list while remaining fully present with each person they serve.

“I think a big part of mental health is being able to take what you receive and learn how to release it so that it doesn’t become your burden,” said the Rev. Ben Keckler. “Taking care of your own self is not carrying a suitcase full of other people’s problems. Rather, you direct them where they need to go.”

This year’s Annuitant Visitor Gathering was built around the theme Because of Ministry...Weaving Our Tapestry.

Throughout the gathering, participants were invited to create their own tapestries on personal looms, symbolizing the relationships, stories, and experiences that shape ministry. As they shared ideas, deepened connections, and explored resources to strengthen their ministry of visitation, the imagery of weaving served as a meaningful reminder that each person and experience contributes to the larger fabric of a community.

“As we all return to our communities,” said the Rev. Krista Betz, Interim Director for UCBMA, “may we carry forward the beauty and strength of a ministry rooted in presence, care and connection. Go forth and remind retired clergy and their spouses that they are valued, supported, and forever woven into the life and witness of the United Church of Christ.”
