What if democracy worked differently?

Join Mission & Social Justice for a screening of Goodbye Politicians, Hello Democracy, a documentary exploring a citizens’ assembly held in Michigan during the pandemic. The film follows randomly selected residents as they came together to learn about a public issue, consider different perspectives, and develop recommendations for elected officials.

Citizens’ assemblies offer a compelling model for civic engagement and raise important questions about how communities can participate more deeply in democratic life.

Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m.
First Presbyterian Church
12 West 12th Street, New York, NY 10011

A light supper will be served before the screening. Following the film, the filmmaker and others involved in citizens’ assemblies will join us virtually for a conversation and Q&A.

We hope you will join us for an engaging evening of film, discussion, and reflection on new possibilities for civic participation.

A beautiful new work of art has found a home at First Church!

Prayer Tree Icon by member Bonnie Ford Woit is now installed along the passage from the Sanctuary to the lobby. Created in the early 2000s, the piece was inspired by a trip Bonnie took north of Helsinki, where she learned about a traditional icon-making process using a hard white surface that allows the colors to remain especially pure.

Bonnie created the piece from a piece of wood she had in her studio, bringing what she had learned on that trip into her own work.

We are grateful to Bonnie and to Art at First for sharing this meaningful piece with our community. Be sure to stop and see Prayer Tree Icon the next time you are at First Church!

This Sunday is World Communion Sunday.

Across the world, Christians will gather around the table, reminding us that even across different places, cultures, languages, and traditions, we are one body in Christ.

The image on this week’s bulletin was created for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s 1997 Peacemaking Offering. Originally drawn in oil pastels by Dorothea B. Kennedy and translated into fabric by Gloiela Yau Dolak, the six-foot banner depicts people from many nations making their way toward water and a shared table. As the mountains and hills rejoice, the thirsty are invited to come to the water and the hungry to come to the table.

Everyone is welcome.

Join us this Sunday, October 4 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary or online as we celebrate World Communion Sunday together.

What a wonderful celebration of Keith Blacknall last Sunday!

We were grateful to gather in worship and at Coffee & Fellowship to celebrate Keith and the many years of care, dedication, and friendship he has shared with First Church.

Thank you, Keith, for all you have given to our community. We wish you every blessing and much joy in retirement!

Keith is pictured here with our Sexton, Joe Diaz. We are so grateful for all that our Facilities Staff does each day to care for First Church and make it a welcoming place for all.
