Metropolis (1927) — with the Giorgio Moroder Soundtrack
Fritz Lang's Metropolis is a groundbreaking science-fiction epic that was released in 1927, yet its story is set in the then-distant future of 2026. The film imagines a towering city divided between a privileged elite who live in luxury above ground and an oppressed working class who toil beneath the city to keep its vast machines running.

The story follows Freder, the idealistic son of the city's ruler, who falls in love with Maria, a compassionate woman who preaches peace and unity between the classes. When Freder discovers the brutal conditions endured by the workers, he rejects his privileged life and joins their struggle. Meanwhile, the brilliant but vengeful inventor Rotwang creates a robotic double of Maria, unleashing chaos and manipulating both the wealthy and the workers toward violent conflict.

In 1984, music producer Giorgio Moroder introduced a restored version of Metropolis featuring a contemporary soundtrack with songs by artists including Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Adam Ant, Billy Squier, and Loverboy. The synth-driven score gave the silent classic a distinctly 1980s energy while preserving its visionary imagery and themes.

Nearly a century after its release, Metropolis remains remarkably relevant. Although audiences in 1927 viewed 2026 as a far-off future, many of its themes—economic inequality, artificial intelligence, automation, mass surveillance, and the widening gap between society's powerful and powerless—continue to resonate today. Its enduring message is captured in the film's famous closing line: "The mediator between the head and the hands must be the heart."

On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed into law. The protections granted, including prohibiting job discrimination based on disability, equal access to state and local government programs, public transport, and public housing and accessibility to private businesses open to the public, were won after decades of protest and activism from disability rights advocates.

It's a reminder that when we build a world that secures people with disabilities with strengthened protections and access, it benefits everyone.
