Great Music in a Great Space - Cathedral of St. John the Divine Welcome to Great Music in a Great Space, presenting exceptional music programming in the majestic expanse of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.

From weekly evensong to holiday concerts to guest organist and chamber music recitals, there is a musical experience for everyone at St. John the Divine! The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine is the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. It is chartered as a house of prayer for all people and a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership. Directions to the Cathedral:

From the George Washington Bridge and Westchester: Take the Henry Hudson Parkway south. Exit at 125th St. (turn left onto 125th St.) At third light, make a right on Amsterdam Ave. From Long Island:Take the Throgs Neck Bridge to Cross Bronx Expressway. Approaching the George Washington Bridge, keep right to Henry Hudson Parkway South. Go to the 96th Street Ramp. On 96th Street, go across three avenues (West End, Broadway, Amsterdam). On Amsterdam, turn left and travel up to 112th street. Or Take the Midtown Tunnel to 34th Street, Cross 34th Street to Tenth Avenue. Go right on 10th Ave to 112th Street (Tenth Avenue becomes Amsterdam at 72nd Street). From New Jersey: Holland or Lincoln Tunnel to Henry Hudson Parkway (also called the West Side Highway). Go Uptown (North) to 96th Street, go across three avenues (West End, Broadway, Amsterdam). On Amsterdam, turn left and travel to 112th street. Or George Washington Bridge to Henry Hudson Parkway (also called the West Side Highway) go south to 125 Street exit, head east to Amsterdam Avenue, turn right to go south to 112 Street. PARKING
There is no public parking on the grounds of the Cathedral. GROUP TOURS may park their bus or van outside the Cathedral on Amsterdam Avenue while they are visiting the Cathedral, between 9AM-5PM. This spring, we are excited to offer 7 free organ recitals, featuring performers from around the world! Join us for the first, this Sunday, March 3 at 5 pm, as Shannon Murphy Mathai plays works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Sarah Rimkus, William Albright, Herbert Howells, and John Weaver! The recital is preceded by 4 pm Evensong with our Cathedral Choir & Chorale singing Palestrina.

This Sunday kicks off our free Sunday Organ Recital Spring Season!

We begin with a performance by Shannon Murphy Mathai. Shannon is Organist and Assistant Music Director at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, Alabama

Kent Tritle, Director of Cathedral Music & Organist, will perform our next post-Evensong recital this Sunday, September 24 at 5 pm! His free program will include Eugene Hancock’s Fantasy, Charles Coleman’s Passacaglia from Sonata 1, J. S. Bach’s Concerto in D Minor after Vivaldi, and Marcel Dupré’s virtuosic Prelude and Fugue in G Minor. Join us for another Sunday of great music in our glorious space!

Next up in our Sunday Post-Evensong Recital series – our own Artist in Residence, David Briggs! This Sunday, September 17 at 5 pm, join us for this spectacular free program including the heroic Te Deum by Jean Langlais, David’s own Trio Sonata, and the monumental and transcendent Prelude, Adagio and Chorale Variations on Veni Creator by Maurice Duruflé. The recital is preceded by 4 pm Evensong with our renowned Cathedral Choir. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Our Sunday post-Evensong recitals resume tomorrow, September 10 at 5 pm, with a free performance by organist Theo van Wyk! Theo is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Upon completing his Doctor of Music in 2005, he became the first person in South Africa to receive this degree, as well as the first person of color to achieve this milestone in the field of music studies in South Africa. Van Wyk has performed around South Africa, the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Namibia – and we look forward to welcoming him to our own Cathedral tomorrow for a program exploring South African organ music!

Join us tonight at 7:30 pm as David Briggs brings to life one of the great gems of the organ repertoire!

Tomorrow night is the final solo organ concert of the Great Music in a Great Space season! 🎹

Artist in Residence David Briggs performs Franz Liszt's monumental Fantasia on "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam," in addition to works by Debussy, Stravinsky, J. S. Bach and Thomas Arne.
