Shavuot begins tonight. This festive spring holiday has a lot to offer! We celebrate Matan Torah, or receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. We read the Book of Ruth, which is set during the ancient wheat harvest. Our 3 pilgrimage holidays mentioned in Torah all have an agricultural element to them.

Rabbinic Judaism wisely connected the physical and spiritual together when infusing each holiday with layers of meaning. During the times of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem we brought Bikkurim, the first fruits of the harvest. There is also a beautiful legend that when the Torah was given at Har Sinai, the mountain burst out in flowers. For these reasons it is a tradition to bring greens and flowers into our homes and synagogues on Shavuot.

Of course what would Shavuot be without the added element of cheesecakes! Come celebrate Shavuot with us this year:

What a fun night making knishes along with Chef Marisa Baggett and the Institute for Southern Jewish Life.

appeared on our radar after news of the arson attack earlier this year at Beth Israel in Jackson, Mississippi. We were moved to donate then and happy to continue supporting programming from this community attacked by Jew hatred and violence.

Will community cooking save the world? Maybe. But can we do a better job at Jewish achdut/unity? Yes. One knish at a time.

It's also Jewish American Heritage month and we're celebrating it like loud, proud NYers. B'te-avon!

Special thanks to Sandy Albert for this one!

Mazal tov and thank you to the Social Action Committee for creating a meaningful and uplifting program marking the 8th annual HIAS Refugee Shabbat at VT.
