Central’s current building was constructed in 1922 as the original home for Park Avenue Baptist Church with funding provided by John D. Central held its first service at its Park Avenue location on Sunday, September 22, 1929.

He is risen; He is risen, indeed! Our three morning services on Easter Sunday filled our building with life and celebration. From the powerful praises echoing through the sanctuary to the joyous smiles on the faces of our children while hunting for eggs and learning the resurrection story, there was so much to be thankful for on Easter at Central! We invite you to continue worshipping with us this spring on Sundays at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., or 5 p.m. as we begin our new sermon series, “God’s Vision for a New Humanity.”

“In a world and a city that both tell us to consume as much as we can and measure our worth by performance, Central has helped remind the two of us to live counter-formed to those messages, rooted instead in the unconditional love of Jesus. I (Matt) came to Central my very first Sunday in New York City, planning to “church hop” for a while. But from the moment I arrived, the biblical teaching, genuine community, and Christlike example of the staff and congregation were evident, and it quickly became home. I’m deeply grateful that Haley later joined me and became involved in Community Group life, and together we’ve had the joy of serving in Children’s Ministry with the two- and three-year-olds. Through Central, we’ve met lifelong friends and spiritual mentors who model what it looks like to live faithfully in New York City. It’s also been a place where we’ve invited friends and coworkers to serve alongside us, taking advantage of Central’s volunteer opportunities, including making sandwiches for the Bowery Mission. Community Groups have been especially formative for us, and for me, leading a group these past two years has been a meaningful way to step into helping others experience the fullness of the gospel and Christ’s mercy. Surrounded by this community, the Lord has continually revealed more of himself to us, reminding us that his love is abundant, and that we are invited to rest in it. We are so grateful for what the Lord is doing through Central Church, and we look forward to continuing to call Central our church home as we prepare for marriage in May 2026.” - Matt Erickson and Haley James

In 2 Corinthians 8, as Paul speaks on generosity, he interestingly never uses the word “money”; instead, he speaks of “grace.” He calls the Corinthians — and by extension, us — to excel in this act of grace. As 2025 comes to a close, consider how you might contribute to at Central.

“After returning to the city post–law school, I was looking for a church where I felt comfortable. The first Sunday morning I came to Central, I distinctly remember seeing how many people had real conversations during the passing of the peace and even moved around the room to greet different people. This solidified for me that this was the place for me, and I’m now working on making Central my church home. Throughout my upbringing and into adulthood, I was always told to save money, contribute to my 401k, promptly pay any loans that I might accumulate — these were the financial staples the world taught me. But I now realize that these are only a part of the story. To me, giving to Central is as important and essential to my life as any of the above, and it should be treated as such. This might be a pragmatic approach, but the reality is that helping to build and sustain Central and Central’s community is helping to contribute to the present and future of so many more people than just myself.” - Rachel Phillips

“One of the strange parts about being a young adult in NYC is that, other than maybe a few of your bosses, you often don’t naturally interact with people from other age groups. I love that on any given Sunday at Central, I can see three generations of a family sitting in a pew together. It’s what I grew up seeing with my family and my friends’ families at church in the South. Over the past couple years, I have become friends with men a generation above me in my Bible study who have provided amazing advice and support, both in good times and hard times. I have also volunteered in the Children’s Ministry in an attempt to pay that idea forward. I think it’s beautiful to come into church and worship our God together with friends and mentors of all ages. It’s a small (albeit different) picture of the diversity and mutual love that’s characteristic of heaven.” - David Scurry

“I look forward to starting each week at Central — welcomed by a friendly greeting and reminded that God’s goodness is greater than the stresses inherent to New York City life. The wisdom that comes from the pulpit, through conversations at Community Group, and from deep-rooted church friendships offers fresh perspective, keeps me grounded in what’s most important, and is a constant source of support and encouragement in my daily life. I am so thankful for the preaching, the singing, the meals, the lectures, the concerts, the social gatherings, the ministries, and everything else Central offers. But most of all, I am thankful for the message of joy, hope, and grace that radiates from the special people who are part of this special place.” - Sarah Sherman

“After graduating from college, I moved to New York City to begin my career and adult life. Most of my friends ended up settling in other parts of the country, and my industry leaves me with little time to form new relationships. I knew this transition would be a challenge, and for a while, I felt concerned about the loneliness I might face. Sundays are primarily my time to worship our Lord, but my emphasis also quickly turned to finding fellowship. Through Twaambo Moyo and Central’s Young Professionals Ministry, I found a community of recent graduates who come from all walks of life and are walking through a similar season as me: new transplants who have a shared love for Christ and are figuring out adulthood. I felt at home, and it shaped me in many ways. My faith has deepened simply by being surrounded by believers who genuinely love God and want to grow. We encourage, challenge, and help one another. It’s been a joy inviting my friends — some visiting Christians, some who don’t yet believe but are curious or unsure about the faith — into a space where they can ask questions and meet people of a similar age. Central and its ministries serve as the ‘third place’ that many in my generation are longing for. With nothing substantial outside of home and work, they can often feel isolated and disconnected. But Central is a place where I can reflect, grow spiritually, and be known. I’m not sure how I would have navigated my transition without this community. A year and a half later, I remain grounded in my faith and reminded that we are in this together.” - David Montenegro

What does grace look like? It can look like someone new to the city who finds the friendship and community he’s been longing for through a Young Professionals Ministry. It can look like a couple bringing stability to their whirlwind city life through Community Group involvement. It can look like a family finding support in their parenting and a theologically sound home for their kids through the Children’s Ministry. Not only can it look like this; it does look like this, thanks to your generosity.

As you’ve seen through our Instagram series thus far (and will continue to see in the coming weeks), your donation to Central today enables incredible stories of grace that display the power of the gospel and exhibit lasting, real-life impact! This Giving Tuesday, help us close the gap and finish 2025 strong so the ministry of Central can continue to impact lives and produce stories of grace.

“Central Church is truly a home for everyone. Its gospel-centered teachings affirm the blessings we have already received and the grace we could never earn, offering a message of hope that our city and our world deeply need. Our family gives joyfully to Central, grateful for the opportunity to support the church’s ministries and the staff who faithfully ensure that God’s Word is carried throughout New York City and beyond. Our own lives have been profoundly enriched by this church — especially through Community Groups and the Children’s Ministry — and we delight in supporting this extraordinary community of faith.” - Stephen and Emily Welker
