We are living in a time when selfishness is not just a bad habit—it’s become a way of life. Everything around us teaches us to focus on ourselves first. Social media tells us to “secure the bag,” “protect your peace,” and chase status and money at all costs. The system we live under—capitalism—pushes this even harder. It’s a system built on the idea that more is never enough and that success is measured by what you have, not who you are. I believe this way of thinking is not only wrong, it’s dangerous.

Drapetomania was a pseudoscientific diagnosis used to describe the supposed mental illness of enslaved people who ran away. The term was coined in 1851 by Dr. Samuel A. Cartwright, an American physician.

Explanation
Cartwright believed that slavery was natural for Africans and that only those with a mental illness would want to escape.

He promoted drapetomania as a scientific inquiry, but it was actually a conflation of politics and medicine.

Cartwright's treatment suggestions included whipping, amputation, and forced labor.

The term drapetomania comes from the Greek words drapetēs, meaning "runaway slave", and mania, meaning "madness".
Drapetomania has been debunked as a pseudoscientific theory and part of scientific racism.
