I began making films in 2016 to document the people, programs, and communities I was serving. What started as simple event recap videos evolved into documentary filmmaking that preserves community wisdom, supports advocacy, and tells stories that educate, inspire, and strengthen communities.

Today, my work combines journalism, documentary film, and strategic arts engagement to create media with purpose.

My master’s dissertation focused on Longitudinal Youth Ministry, but the deeper I got into the work, the clearer something became to me: we cannot seriously talk about youth development without talking about family engagement.

We spend a lot of time asking what young people need. More programs. More opportunities. Better schools. Mentors. Safe spaces. All of that matters. But young people also need relationships that last. They need adults who know them, families that are supported, churches that make room for them, and communities that invest in who they are becoming, not just respond when something goes wrong.

That is part of why I believe youth ministry has to extend beyond Sunday morning. We have to engage parents and caregivers. We have to mentor young people over time. We have to create opportunities for them to lead, serve, create, ask questions, make mistakes, and still know they belong.

There are larger social, economic, educational, and systemic issues that families cannot solve on their own. But I do believe this: healthier families help build stronger communities.

Youth development is community development. Family engagement is community engagement. And if we are serious about the future of our communities, we have to be just as serious about investing in the relationships that help young people grow.
